so you were using optical for sound when playing sacd then?
didnt know nirvana had a sacd. where did you find it?

you sure thats a real sacd? they typically are not dts,... that would be dvd-a or something home-made

well i wanted to know cause im a fan. saw them play in the early 90s with L7.
did a search and all i can find was unplugged dvd dts. i think it really depends on the player for a dvd audio to work. that may be the problem

also i have another dvd player thats a few years old that playes both dvd audio and sacd but the catch is output is only from the 5.1 analog outs

If it's a dts cd and your reciever doesn't support dts that would explain the noise.

If you let you Ps3 know in the audio properties that the AVR doesn't do DTS it may re-encode it as PCM and then you can listen to it.

My AVR doesn't do dts and I have it hooked up via optical but the PS3 can change it to a high bitrate Dolby Digital track on the fly... very cool,.. and not something "sony needs to fix"

that would only give 2channel pcm. receiver doesnt support hdmi
for that, might as well play the cd

i figured that cause of where you posted this. thats why i said sacd is via hdmi only.

all i can say is if other cds work, dvd movies work with dts then maybe the format your using isnt compatable. not sure if your using a dvd audio or a cd with dts or sacd

To be clear,.. the disc is a CDR that says Nevermind with a shapie right?

Maybe the disc itself is the problem. It should play back on any DVD player with DTS support so you may try another player.

What does the PS3 identify it as? In the menu (xmb) you should see some description of what the PS3 reads it as.

we know that now kinda hard to determin when no information is given about the disc
