I have owned an HD DVD player from the beginning but pretty much stopped getting HD DVDs when i went over to BD when the PS3 released. I did pick up a bunch of $10 movies though in the past few weeks that arent available on BD. I wouldnt recommend buying a player NOW though. I am still buying some cheap movies on it because i already have the player.

PQ/$$$, I'm sure the XA2 is the better bargain, but it appears to be no longer king of the PQ hill.
True, the Realta would be a step up.

The Reon is also in the Onkyo 875/905 receivers. So, there are ways of getting one that helps other content (e.g. cable, sat, Laserdisc, etc.) too.

And you get a Realta in a Denon 4308 receiver (and up).

Man, that was cold. Funny though.

DVD is more reliable than HD DVD.

My Pioneer 59AVi DVD player (which I bought in 2004 -as an ex-demo model no less-) hasn't frozen once, with intensive use by all members of the family.

On the other hand, my Toshiba A1 has got stuck on the "Welcome" bootup message several times, forcing me to physically unplug it and reboot. And only I use it, and exclusively to watch HD DVD (so actual usage time is under 100 hours).

Hi.

I know it's tempting. I wouldn't recommend buying into HD DVD now for one reason: There will be no new hardware in the future.

I am purple and always thought, if Toshiba loses the war, they will provide some sort of legacy support, like offering some their future DVD players with HD DVD playback or they might even build a dual format player. Erm. They friggin' pulled the plug completely!

I don't know how long my player will last, but it will break down eventually in the future. Sending it in for repair will probably be very expensive, so at that time i would better use that money and buy most of the movies on Blu-ray.

Many HD DVD owners, who do not want to get rid of their gear and the movies, are now buying backup players as an eventual replacement. I myself will probably get one or two cheap pc drives for that propose.

Honestly, i would recommend to resist the impulse, even if the movies seem to be cheap now.

I am sure the Denon Realta-equipped blu-ray player is superb.

On the issue of Reon/Realta equipped receivers -- I have heard mixed results from the reviews of the Onkyo 875. I ended up getting an 805 because so many people felt the PQ and other associated issues with the Reon implementation in the 875/905 was not worth the trouble.

My 805 only cost me $543 (open box at Amazon Warehouse) -- which is over $400 less than the cheapest 875 I have seen (which was also at Amazon Warehouse as an open box).

For me -- my $250 XA2 will do nicely.

As I have said before -- just get a Mack warranty. I bought one for my XA2 for $45 for 4 years of coverage. You use local authorized repair vendors and no out of pocket expenses.

5308, in fact. 4308 uses a Faroudja solution.

By all accounts a pretty fabulous upconverter and, for $250, a bargain.
