When I talked to OPPO they said it was the disk and it did not require a firmware update! This is nuts

Has anyone actually looked at the information on the blu-ray's inner ring to find out if this is indeed a new batch of discs or if the numbers match like the UPC?

I just find it a bit difficult to believe that this has actually been remastered and still has the same issue.

Perhaps you should contact them and tell them the replacement disk doesn't work and Sony intends to provide a firmware update for their players.

This may end up the same way Brave and Nemo did. Everyone settled for processing the audio in their players and sending pcm to their avrs.

Here is the response from Oppo I got regarding a firmware update:

<<
We do not know when we might be able to release a firmware to resolve these errors since the issues are explicitly disc related. Sony screwed up in the authoring of this title, and it may be possible that we can compensate for their errors, but it is likely that the disc will need to be replaced.

Wow, those are very strong words considering how these companies usually go out of their way to be polite to each other in public.

There is really nothing Sony can do to properly fix it but go back and re-author the entire disc. I do not foresee that happening anytime soon.

Was thinking that myself while reading this. Did Oppo really say "Sony screwed up"? Thats not very corporate.

Well, when Sony's only solution to the issue on their own blu-ray players is to change your audio settings, it's fairly clear that this is not going to be as easy as just a simple firmware update.

If there isn't one already, there should be a sticky with all the titles that have technical issues, what to look for on your copy to see if you have a dud, and details (if any) on how to get a replacement. Everything in one location.

Could be worse... I have a Samsung player that doesn't play a lot of newer Blu-rays... and I ultimately had to buy a new Blu-ray player (Sony this time) because of it.

The audio issues bite, don't get me wrong... but the manufacturers are bailing on us when much bigger issues come up on some movies with some players... I'll be surprised if this gets resolved any time soon. I'm pretty sure FOX never really addressed the Die Hard audio issue.

After their disasters with the 1000, 1200, 1400, and 1500 models I have been telling people to avoid them since 2008. Sony, LG, and Panasonic make the best by far. Oppo is up there to if you have a lot of obscure formats you need to play like DVD-A or SACD.

It would be funny if every consumer ended up returning their copy back to the retailer and the retailers in turn shipped all of their copies back to Sony. Guess Sony would finally get the message that their is something wrong with their product and they need to fix it.

Has anyone checked to see if they have dropouts while bitstreaming the French or Spanish Dolby 5.1 tracks? Is it only the TrueHD track that has dropouts?

I bought the BD + DVD combo pack with Bonus Disc at Target.

Yesterday, I received the BD-only set. It has a sticker advertising the God of War: Ascension demo on the shrinkwrap, which leads me to believe that Sony is indeed simply sending out existing first-run copies of the movie.

OK, I finally checked my disk on my Panasonic DMP-BD80 set on bitstream and the ONLY issue that I had with it was half way through the movie(1 hour 6 second mark) when the character sits down at the piano. The sound went quite for a few seconds then the picture froze up lasting about a total of 15 seconds. I then set my player to PCM it it does the exact same thing at the same spot. So this appears to be a layer change issue and not the bitstream issue.

Can anyone confirm that this is where the layer change takes place, and is anyone else having this issue at this spot in the move(1 hour 6 sec mark)?

Strange, the layer change was a recurring issue with DVDs, but I believe that this is the very first time that I have noticed this on a BD.

I'm confused... If Brave and Finding Nemo are NOT Cinavia and Total Recall IS Cinavia, how can Cinavia be ruled out as a possible cause?

Both Brave and Finding Nemo work great on my Oppo BDP-83 to Rotel RSX-1560, but Total Recall has audio dropouts. I believe the BDP-83 does NOT support Cinavia.

For that matter, what happens (and what is SUPPOSED to happen) when an older player that does NOT support Cinavia plays a Cinavia title??

Nope. No layer change issue for me when playing PCM. I didnt get any further than 15 minutes in with bitstreaming so couldnt tell you.

Any problems with the walmart steelbook version of this? I think I may decide to take the plunge and get the steelbook of this if I can still find it.

A description of how Cinavia works is in the article linked in my prior post. If the disk doesn't have the 'watermark' or the player doesn't have the Cinavia detector, it is ineffective. So, if you have a player that doesn't support Cinavia, playing a disk with the watermark will not cause that copy protection (DRM) to occur. As of 1 Feb, 2013, all certified new players will support Cinavia. Many older players including the PS3 have received Cinavia in a firmware update.

In my post, I was speculating on a common cause for the dropouts on Brave, Finding Nemo and Total Recall. Sony has said that complex branching was the issue on Total Recall. Branching has been used for years. So, is it caused by branching + Cinavia, branching+ TrueHD or something else? The fact that Nemo and Brave do not have Cinavia watermarks indicate that it is not part of a common cause for the dropouts.
