United Kingdom Possible releases for films that have been released by Criterion

Good morning,

I was wondering if anyone has any information about possible releases in the UK that are out in America from Criterion.

I was looking to know in particular about the following titles:

On the Waterfront - 11th August 2014
The Night of the Hunter - Out on Arrow
Seven Samurai - Out on BFI Steelbook
8½ - Out on Argent Films
The Killing - CinemaCult Australia
Paths of Glory - CinemaCult Australia
Days of Heaven - Not Out
The Lady Vanishes - 3rd November from Network
Fanny and Alexander - Nothing
The Rules of the Game - Nothing

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Blow Out comes out in may. That's released by Arrow.

I reckon the BFI might release some Kurosawa on blu in the future.

It's well worth going region free though, even if those films come out in the UK I doubt they will better the Criterion versions.

BFI announced they were releasing Seven Samurai, then they changed it and nothing has been said about it since.

Some Criterion releases work on UK players anyway with the menu work around.

From that list the only one I tried was Lady Vanishes and it was successful.

Are you serious about The Lady Vanishes working on a Region B Machine? Must get it ordered up!

Thanks for all the responses everyone!

I wonder how much more profit Criterion would make if all their releases were
region free.

Good question. I also wonder how much more it would cost them to get international licenses. Not my forte.

What about 'Kes', that never got a UK release, and you couldn't get a more English film than that, why they got that at all I'll never know

Yes, tried it on a Panasonic & Samsung, worked both times.

All you do when the "Region mismatch" comes up is press "stop" then "menu" and it'll take you to the main menu of the disc.

Doesn't work with all Criterions though.

Thanks for your help! Do you have any other Criterion's that work on Region B machines like this?

Tried it with 8 1/2 and just came back with "region mismatch"
Definitely must get some of these imported! I'll probably just buy one at first to double check and if successful happy days!

On the Waterfront - This is with Sony, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it as one of those gold banner releases (think Lawrence of Arabia, Taxi Driver).

The Night of the Hunter / The Killing / Paths of Glory - These are MGM titles. I wouldn't bet on them releasing them themselves but they could be licensed by willing parties like Second Sight.

8½ - The current DVD release is by Nouveaux, who haven't released a single thing since 2010. We're not going to be seeing a Blu-Ray release unless someone else gets the rights.

Fanny and Alexander - I doubt it, Tartan haven't seemed very interested in upgrading their titles since they came out of bankruptcy.

The Rules of the Game / Seven Samurai - These are with the BFI. While I'm confident that we'll see them eventually, who knows when.

Days of Heaven - I doubt Paramount would bother releasing this.

Does anyone know if the menu cheat works on Night of the Hunter?

Just tried it, I was going to do it later as I've got 40 other titles to test.

It works.

Fantastic! It looks like I'm going to be going on a big spree on these Criterions! Great for me; not so great for my bank balance!

It seems like Criterion has received many emails in regards to region encoding >>>
