I recently moved out of state and was unable to bring my speakers and such with me. Left it at my friends house... i was thinking of driving back to get them but its roughly a 24 hour drive one way. Just wondering if anyone has shipped a stereo and if so did it arrive in one piece. Also what was the cost ballpark assuming you have floorstanding speakers.

i can tell you it won't be cheap.
it's best to ship the pieces separately as putting them in one box presents more than one problem; one of them being the box would be so big. as well if an avr is involved, the weight and insurance is what makes them kinda expensive to ship. and if they're not packed correctly, then it will get destroyed. what i suggest is to call your friend and have him take measurements of the items to be shipped along with the weight of each piece. he can then take those measurements to his local ups/fedex store and they can give him an estimate on how much it will cost to ship everything. tell him to also inquire about insurance. ups gives you $100 worth of insurance for free, but anything else will cost about $2 per $100 extra. you can then take that cost to ship (which includes shipping, boxes, packing peanuts, bubble wrap, etc.) everything and compare it with the cost of driving back to pick them up yourself. i used to work at a ups store and we had a guy ship an onkyo avr and it got utterly destroyed during shipping. we didn't pack it, though. he said he packed it and that it was good enough so he felt safe about it. and he got additional insurance on it since it obviously cost more than $100. hen customers did that, we made them sign a waiver saying that they declined store packing while purchasing additional shipping. when you purchase additional insurance, ups will only pay out a claim if the package was packed by the store or if it was packed to their standards; which we always explained. well, he came back all pissed because his avr got destroyed and was talking about suing us (our store) and ups. we told him about the waiver he signed and that we explained to him what would happen if it got destroyed. end of story? he didn't get squat from us OR ups. we also had a guy who shipped a 50" plasma IN THE ORIGINAL BOX IN WHICH IT CAME. he said he didn't want any other packaging, just some additional insurance. he signed the waiver and went on his way. yep, you guessed it; the tv got destroyed (glass shattered, main board broken in 2 pieces). he, too, was not payed a claim because he denied in-store packaging because he says it would cost too much. it was cheaper than a new 50" plasma, though. |
