As the extras for both are exactly the same for the 2D and 3D versions that means the extra disc is because they have chosen to split the 3D version across two discs. Whether you see the point of that or not, it's what they've gone for.
Disc 1: 3D BluRay
Disc 2: 3D Extras
Disc 3: BluRay
Disc 4: BluRay Extras
Disc 5: DVD no?

Pass will wait for EE.
I never bought LOTR standard and wont get this in TC either.
Good to see they not putting both 3D and 2D on one disc though.

Looked on the Sainsburys Entertainment site.

2D is £29.99, 3D is £17.99

Finger slippage methinks

There are no 3D extras - the extras are the same on both versions. So no need for a '3D extras' disc.

Stretching the Hobbit to 3 films is really way too much already. The books like 300 pages long

They are already inserting events from other short stories to pad out the Hobbit, so extending it even more could be risky. I'll still look forward to the EE though. Mostly because I want some beautiful packaging.

Is the Sainsbury's special feature list correct?

Peter Jackson's videoblogs 1-10, trailers and 'New Zealand: Home of Middle Earth'.

That's it? If that correct that stinks as I've seen all the blogs on-line. They should charge £12.99 for it if it's so light on extras!

Hmm, I wonder if it being in 48 fps makes it a heavier file?

The home video release won't be in HFR.

I've read other threads talking about whether HFR is viable on current BD and HD spec and basically it's not. So I can't see it being included if nothing can play it back.

I'd imagine some PC's might be able to handle it if in a non-BD format.

At the moment BD's can handle 1920 × 1080 pixels at up to 59.94 fields per second (interlaced) and 59.94 frames per second at a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels (progressively scanned).

It was filmed in 5K though http://www.thehobbitblog.com/?p=3933 so they could potentially release it at that some day.

I think they'd have to redo all the special-effect shots in 5k though.

I personally couldn't care less about 3D but as long as they give equal extras to both formats (which doesn't always happen - looking at you Fox!) i'm fine with it being on the market.

It could lead to a lower video bit-rate especially as this movie is almost 3 hours, the disc would have to cram 338 minutes of video onto one disc.
