I order from Import CDs and MovieMars a lot, because they are always the cheapest third-party dealers on Amazon for brand-new movies or brand-new CDs. I go way back with them.

I went ahead and pre-ordered this (in addition to The Blob), but does anyone know what sort of audio track will be on here, such as mono, stereo, surround, or if it will have lossless options?

The VCI website indicates this will have Dolby Digital 5.1 / PCM. Keep in mind this is a 1961 film that was generally released in magnificent mono. Don't expect an immersive auditory experience -- not unless those salt mines cached the original audio stems.

And, as an aside, here's some interesting production background stuff I happened upon --

Thanks! Even if the PCM was in mono, PCM mono can sound pretty good (the Godzilla blu ray comes to mind). I'm looking forward to this. I haven't seen this since the video rental store I went to as a kid closed down, so it will be somewhat nostalgic but mostly like seeing it for the first time.

Default DVD Savant reports

Glen Erickson writes reviews of Blu-ray/DVD releases as DVD Savant. His reviews and articles are a treasure trove of information.

http://www.dvdtalk.com/dvdsavant/

"And, to get back to obsessive topic #14, I've heard back from added-value editor-producer/filmmaker Daniel Griffith, who is quick to announce that he's turned in his cut for the making-of docu for the new VCI Blupray of Gorgo. About six months ago another Savant correspondent Lee Kaplan asked me to help him contact the VCI people. Among his possessions he found a private 8mm movie taken in a British film studio in 1959 that had a brief shot of the Gorgo monster suit either being sculpted or constructed. Now I've been told that Kaplan's film clip has made it into Griffith's docu, and we'll finally get to see it.

I don't know of anyone ever publishing any preproduction or BTS photos of Gorgo beyond an article in an old American Cinematographer, which I researched while working on 1941. I've only heard rumors of what might have happened to the rubber Gorgo suit-a-saurus. I surely hope that VCI and Griffith have uncovered other revelatory materials for this key childhood attraction."

The film trailer is up at the VCI site and is the cleanest I've seen in ages -- it's like nothing I've ever seen before on YouTube. It's certain to go viral there.

Does anyone else who has preordered this on Amazon still not have a delivery estimate? It merely states that they will email me when they have a delivery estimate, although The Blob will be here on the day it is released. I was hoping for release date delivery on Gorgo, since I ordered it via a Amazon Prime.

I pre-ordered from Import CDs, substantially cheaper. From a recent DVD Savant column:

Quote:
I've seen .... a check disc of VCI's new Gorgo release! The
movie is just as good as I remember and the disc looks very good. The nighttime
big destruction scenes are spectacular in Blu-ray. A full review of final
product will follow closer to the release date, but I will remark on the disc's
elaborate extras, most of which seem to be the work of Daniel Griffith and Lee
Kaplan, with major on-screen input from Ted Newsom. The extras are a real fan
round-up -- and the participants are given a special on-screen credit. The
galleries appear to have rounded up every poster, lobby card and photo ever
released of the film. And they have a couple of BTS stills of the Gorgo head
costume, and the elaborate hydraulic rig that the monster suit mime had to wear.

I was as happily surprised as anyone back in late 2011 when VCI announced
that it was going to access the original printing elements stored by MGM in a
midwestern salt mine. Gorgo has been impossible to see in a really
satisfying form for decades, and VCI's disc replicates the jaw-dropping matinee
experience for a certain stratum of baby boomers like myself. At the moment the
disc's official release date is March 19, and frankly, the price is right as
well.

Terrible cover artwork, lol. They should've stuck with the original poster.

Real excited about this release though! Gorgo is a childhood favorite of mine.

No problem - that price is a major bargain! For future reference, Import CDs is also the cheapest place to buy Olive, Kino and Cohen Film releases, although the prices often (always?) go up after release.

How much with shipping? I have a prime trial so I'm getting mine shipped free, so just the 14.99 for me.
