Database entry

I picked this up cheap from Big W. Doesn't seem to be too much info floating about for it so I figured it deserved its own thread. I remember seeing it late in the 90's and as a sci-fi fan and a mystery/thriller fan I enjoyed it a fair bit. Looking forward to revisiting it. I don't expect it to hold up so well but who knows.

I'll post some technical specs and screenshots later on and my thoughts once I've had a chance to watch it.

I actually grabbed this and watched awhile ago, wasn't an awful transfer, but certainly isn't demo material. The film was pretty good though! Interesting concept.

^ Just did some screenshots now. Skimming it and yes it's an old average master with some edge enhancement but there are an awful lot of soft shots which are source related. It could definitely look a lot better but considering the price I paid (less than the DVD) any minor increase is an improvement.

Speaking of screenshots: click spoiler tag to reveal.

Disclaimer: These screenshots have been taken directly from the disc with no post processing other than the placement of a watermark. They are PNG format so the file size is larger however this retains the original image quality. They are of course only intended as an indication of the quality of the title. As always, a motion picture should be viewed in motion.

As for the film, I'm a sucker for some of those 70's/80's old school thriller/conspiracy/sci-fi type films. That, plus it's got a heap of actors I don't mind including Hal Holbrook and Sam Waterston.

I am not seeing any edge-enhancement, atex. Unless you wish to count that extremely light halo in the first shot. If there is nothing elsewhere in the film, I'd say this is a pretty good transfer. It might be from a dated master, but it has an organic look.

It appears to be the same one ITV used.

It's an identical disc. We even get the UK ratings logos printed on it.

There aren't really instances of edge enhancement in those shots other than some haloing in the first shot like you mentioned (particularly around OJ's hair) but there are some instances out in the desert following the
[Show spoiler]plane crash
where the haloing is more prominent. Shots with the mountains against the sky fare the worst.

Here are a couple showing what I'm seeing:

I'm not complaining though. It's certainly not terrible, fairly light on in fact which is why I only mentioned it off-hand. If anything it's really the fact that it's a dated master on show affecting the overall picture quality but considering the film and the price point it's to be expected. Considering the bargain basement price I paid any improvement is a plus. For others paying more that may not be the case but considering it can be had for $5 and under it's well worth the price of admission particularly considering how fond I am of the film.

Good to see you over in the Aussie forums as well! Here's hoping Umbrella get you to do some more reviews of their discs. Their release of Scanners is excellent!

Yes, I completely agree. I actually have the ITV disc and am quite pleased with it. I am fine with transfers that have been struck from dated masters, especially for films such as this one. As long as someone did not go in and tried to color-correct, re-sharpen, etc., I am fine. Such is the economic reality - you cannot have brand new scans for every film.

I often read the forum Umbrella are terrific guys, but we do not have an Amazon affiliate yet so it is a bit difficult to cover unique releases. But maybe this year we could do more.

See you around, atexp

This is a great movie and still holds up 35 years later.

Picture quality is a cut above the DVD (compare the end credits in red on the DVD - can hardly be read clearly) but sound wise it's lacking. The US DVD offered 5.1 Dolby Digital and the soundtrack blasted out of the speakers. Jerry Goldsmith's wonderful music score never sounded better!

Still a fave after all these years.
