Ubisoft invites press to Assassin's Creed event on Feb 27

Quote:
We've been invited to a mysterious Assassin's Creed event on Feb 27th. Anyone else going? Any idea what's planned?

Ok, so this would seem to back up the Pirate theory...

[Show spoiler]

Quote:
“The main characters name is Edward Kenway, father of Haytham Kenway from Assassin’s Creed 3. Edward is known as a Privateer, Assassin and occasional pirate. The games location is set in the Caribbean on multiple islands including Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas.”

The map shows off a Havana centered setting with Florida and Jamaica also getting in on the action. The poster on the other hand shows the lead sporting an almost identical outfit to Assassin’s Creed 3′s Connor.

Is the next Assassin's Creed all about pirates? A tipster just sent over marketing materials for something called Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Ubisoft hasn't announced anything about the next Assassin's Creed just yet, other than the fact that it will star a new character and a new setting, and it will be out next fiscal year.

According to our tipster, this poster will be on store walls on Monday, March 4.

The poster shows a white-hooded assassin—presumably the protagonist of Assassin's Creed IV—on a pirate ship, surrounded by gruff-looking buccaneers. There's a black pirate flag in the background.

Heard rumors about Chinese/Mongol era.
Not that appealing, to me at least.
I would like to see such modern times as WW2 but that might be too technically advanced for an ancient assassin.

Chinese/Mongol era would be cool. Not sure about WWII though, might end up with COD:AC

I like a lot of these ideas from Kotaku.

  • Ancient Egypt: (I would personaly love this setting) Here's Stephen again: "For god's sake, AC Ancient Egypt, with pyramids and the Sphinx to climb would be the coolest thing ever."
  • Throw The Clock Back: In ACIII, lovable ******* Shaun mentions that they could theoretically throw the Animus back to thousands of years before civilization and see what's what. While that might not make for a good game on its own, it would certainly make for some fun, wild parallel-storyline stuff.
  • Feudal Japan or China: (Hinted at in the very first AC game would be my 2nd choice) I don't think I'll ever be happy until we've had an Assassin's Creed game that lets me play as a sweet-ass cloaked killer, lighting across rooftops of China or Japan at night. Yes, it'd be a move backwards in time, which the series hasn't done yet. But who cares? This would be awesome.
  • World War One:(Would be my 3rd choice. Could be interesting to play about during the great war in a way we haven't been able to before.) This one's from Evan, and it's pretty solid. Even if they don't go to World War One in the next game, it seems likely that at some point they will. It'd let the series make its way back to Europe, and would let them focus on a war that video games rarely explore.
  • Pirates? The last one comes from a Reddit rumor thread from a poster who claims to have seen, on someone's laptop on a plane, the title Assassin's Creed: Black Flags. (That's via NeoGAF.) Another Reddit poster claims to have overheard two advertising people in a San Francisco café talking about "Black Flag" as well, though he thought it might just be DLC. That's all entirely unsubstantiated, but if it means that Ubisoft is planning some sort of pirate-centric Assassin's Creed game or expansion, sign me right the hell up.

I would expect that they would just keep it simple though, considering this next game will most likely be a non numbered game, like Brotherhood and Revelations.

So a Civil War setting would probably be it. They'll have the same problem as the revolution in that the south will take the place of the British.

They could more or less use the same engine, evolve the rural and urban systems in ACIII, and carry on the American-centric vibe of this batch of games.

more moral ambiguity, more interesting racial stuff.

Ok, so this would seem to back up the Pirate theory... But it could still be just a cool fan made poster.

Another source is adding weight to this posters legitimacy.

Quote:
So, this is fun. I have on my desk an, as yet unsigned, NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) for something Assassin’s Creed-y happening tomorrow. Once it is signed and after 5pm tomorrow I won’t be able to talk about anything relating to whatever happens tomorrow, not even reveal the name of the game.

In the meantime: hey look everyone, here’s a poster for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag!

The poster looks legit and shows a be-robed Assassin fighting off rufty tufty pirates, obviously the Naval battles in Assassin’s Creed III will be the focus for the fourth in the series.

“According to our tipster, this poster will be on store walls on Monday, March 4,” reports Kotaku.

By pure coincidence my NDA will expire at 5pm on Monday 4th of March, what are the chances of that happening?!

The game is rumoured to be out next year so we are expecting Next Gen versions alongside PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flags is a thing, at least until tomorrow afternoon when everyone will be gagged until Monday 4th March and every site has to post about the game together in one big orchestrated PR gush of piratey goodness.

I wasn't particularly fond of the naval challenges either. They did add something as a small mix up but an entire game like that would be annoying unless something between AC3 and then has fixed up the gameplay.

AC always has had solid land based gameplay, so i expect we'll see a pirates of the carribean take on the franchise, but overall i NEED to see them use land based missions as the core focus or it may be the first AC to really bomb down hard.

I really don't think they should have called this AC 4.

This game sounds more like a prequel to 3 and set in the same era and family line as 3, should have just called it AC: Black Flags. Or AC 3: Black Flags. Seems more like a spin off of 3 than a true sequel to the story. Like how AC 2 had Brotherhood and Revelations. 4 should have been kept for the true sequel to the story.

I am currently playing Assassin's Creed 3, and so far this game looks cool too. It is definitely on my radar.

If they can fix the problems with AC3 I will be all over this.
I do feel that AC3 had a strong narrative and hopefully Black Flag will continue that.

What they MUST fix for ACIV:

1. Make the side missions WORTHWHILE. Nothing was more frustrating than completing a naval mission and getting nothing for it. Yes, it was fun, but the sidequests need to have a meaningful in-game purpose. Spare me the BS about the "journey" being more important. Give me in-game currency. Give me a better weapon. Give me something.

2. Fix the crafting system. Far too tedious to use and nothing really of value came from it. FarCry3 did this PERFECTLY. It made me want to hunt and gave me cool stuff for doing it. Emulate that.

3. Fix the notoriety system. I mean seriously, how many times did I end up being chased down due to accidently jumping into an unmarked "forbidden area"? That got old FAST.

4. Leave out pointless crap like Encyclopedia of the Common Man and Pivot Points. They added nothing to the game.

5. This is kind of an extension of 1, but make collecting things like Almanacs WORTHWHILE and provide something of value. Those almanacs enabled me to craft Franklin's inventions. What do you get for crafting those inventions? Nothing.

6. Use optional objectives to ENHANCE to encourage you to play a certain way, not make it tedious and annoying.

7. FIX THE DAMN BUGS!
