Default The Fountain vs. Tree of Life

I've seen the Fountain. Is the Tree of Life at all like the Fountain?

I much preferred The Fountain to Tree of Life, they are not really similar.

This could be a good thread. You should add a poll.

I like The Fountain much better.

Have you seen any other films by Malick?

I love the Tree of life but it isn't for everybody. I've never seen The Fountain but it's on my wish list.

Tree of Life was my favorite film of 2011. Didn't like The Fountain much at all.

I've seen Badlands and Thin Red Line but my question is are they both about finding the tree of life?

WHAT!?!?! A thread that is not about hype, debates about super heroes, pointless controversy, or other classic nonsense? Blu-ray.com HOW DARE YOU?

Seriously though, here are some thoughts...

If there are any comparisons to make between The Fountain (TF) and The Tree of Life (TOL) it's that both films sums are greater than their parts.

Both make an effort to stray away from a traditional film structure, at least what we would assume to be a traditional narrative. Both films aim to be present some grander questions about our lives, though both films take a different approach.

TOL is less like a film and more like meditation piece on ones own existence.
There is a story in here somewhere, but its not floating on the surface, because it was never meant to be. The story takes a backseat to more important and meditative observations about love, nurture vs. nature and loss. Grandiose is an apt word to describe the scene. It's breathtaking, hauntingly beautiful and completely captivating, even if you can't break its uncompromising surface.

TF feels more on point than TOL, both in narrative and its end goal. TF expresses its emotions through its characters, not just its landscapes and tones. As least in comparison to TOL, TF feels more like a traditional film, even though it is still far away from other films.

Both films are challenging and worthy of any cinephiles attention, and should be considered required viewing to any student of modern film. Even if you can't find anything to love in them, there is plenty to respect.

Throw your expectations out the window and enjoy.

Neither one is IMO.

If you like Malecks style, you would be safe to check out ToL.

Haven't seen The Fountain, but seeing as how people are raving about it I should probably check it out soon. I would agree with Snicket that you definitely should leave your expectations at the door when watching it. I'm not personally a fan of it, though I can why others might. If you're looking for movies like that I would recommend Cloud Atlas and especially 2001: A Space Odyssey.

"The film explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future."

Looks like I'll be checking out Cloud Atlas after all.

I loved Tree of Life. Great to enjoy with a nice wine too. (Probably assisted in my interpretation of the film ) I'll definitely check out The Fountain now.

As for Cloud Atlas, the book is fantastic for all you readers out there. Can't wait to see the film.
