Blu-ray on PS3 question

Hello

I'm thinking about getting a PS3, mainly for the Blu-Ray player... the games are nice to though

I have a 1080i HDTV with only DVI and Component inputs. I was planning on using either component video/with optical audio to a receiver or maybe a hdmi to DVI with optical audio.

2 questions...

Is the non hdmi & 1080i going to cause me problems with Blu-Ray movies? I'm hearing something about not being able to play Blu-Ray movies without 1080p HDMI at some point because of some kind of copyright problem? Is that bad info?

Also, any suggestion on what would be better? HDMI to DVI for video or just a straight component connection?

bad info.. 1080i will play just fine with component. The only issue you will have with using component cables is upconverting standard dvd which the ps3 does very nicely. If you use a hdmi to dvi cable you should have no issued with Standard dvd upconverting

dvi to component if you want to watch upconverted Standard dvds. but if your just looking to watch Blu Rays i really see no difference in PQ with a 1080i tv

I might not be able to answer all of your questions (as I do not know the answers) but I can answer some...

As for hdmi vs. component, as long as you have a 1080i max resolution TV, you won't be missing out on anything with component as 1080P can only be achieved with HDMI (i'm pretty sure, but not 100%). I do not know anything about bluray movies only playing in 1080p HDMI in the future, but it seems that with a PS3, it will always be able to display the lower resolutions. This claim seems ludicris because what about all those 720p or 1080i sets?!?!?!Would BluRay completely abandon those prospective customers?

As for using optical audio, as long as you want to stick with 5.1 sounds as well as NON-HD sound you should be fine. If you have a 7.1 or higher or receiver that takes HD sound (PCM, DTS-HD) you might want to invest in running the sound through HDMI.

Also, one thing to keep in mind is DVD UPconverting. The PS3 can upconvert any DVD (non HDM/BluRay) to 720 or 1080 resolution. Problem is, due to copyright issues, it can only upconvert DVDs through HDMI (video). So if you were really set/interested in using this feature, this is something you also have to consider because it cannot be achieved through Component Cables.
