The easy way is to change the settings in the player/receiver menus. However, a fun way is to connect your PS3 to the receiver with an HDMI cable and listen to uncompressed sound on a Blu Ray movie. Then connect the PS3 to the receiver with an Optical cable and listen to Dolby Digital or DTS Digital. I realize that this is a bit tedious, but it has the advantage of helping you understand the difference between the cables as far as uncompressed sound is concerned.

I also recommend that you read my thread on "Home Theater Audio CODECs",
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=41820 .

Pay attention to the conclusions at the end.

so just changing the tracks in the menu will work. i don't have to switch it between bitstream for the dolby digital and linear pcm for the uncompressed track?

If you have a PS3 yes because otherwise you'll get Dolby Digital Decoded by the PS3 at -4db less than PCM. And PCM is louder than DD already so imagine the gap..

I believe it is the triangle button that will bring up a PS3 menu deal without stopping the movie...after that comes up try to find that icon that is a music note...click on that and that will toggle LPCM and DD...there is quiet a difference between the two...
