Default Sony to Start Mass Production of PlayStation 4 in Q3 2013

Quote:
Sony Corp. admits that it does not have a mass-production PlayStation 4 box that it can bring out to the public. Nonetheless, the company seems to be pretty open about its plans regarding the new system and its current state. While the price of the PS4 is something that has yet to be determined, some reports point to the company’s alleged plans to start mass production of the device in Q3 2013.

“We are certainly capable of showing playable game content, but we do not have a mass-production box that we can bring out and pull out. That is still in development in terms of final specs and design,” said Jack Tretton, the president and chief exec of Sony Computer Entertainment America, in an interview with AllThingsD web-site.

In the meantime, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report (which was partly translated by DigiTimes web-site), Taiwan-based supply chain participants for the PlayStation 4, plan to begin shipments in the second quarter of 2013, which means that actual assembly of the console may start in the third quarter, or even earlier, depending on availability of components.

According to the report, including power supply maker Delta Electronics, connector maker Cheng Uei Precision Industry (Foxlink), and thermal module maker Foxconn Technology, will ship PS4 components in Q2.

At present, it is unclear which contract manufacturer will assemble the PlayStation 4 game console. The PS3 is produced by Sony EMCS, Foxconn Technology Group (Hon Hai Precision Industries) and Pegatron.

Sony PlayStation 4 is based on a semi-custom AMD Fusion system-on-chip that integrates eight AMD x86 Jaguar cores, custom AMD Radeon HD core with unified array of 18 AMD GCN-like compute units (1152 stream processors which collectively generate 1.84TFLOPS of computer power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two), various special-purpose hardware blocks as well as multi-channel GDDR5 memory controller.

The PS4 will come with 8GB of unified GDDR5 memory sub-system (with 176GB/s bandwidth) for both CPU and GPU as well as large-capacity hard disk drive. Sony PS4 will be equipped with Blu-ray disc drive capable of reading BDs at 6x and DVDs at 8x speeds, USB 3.0 connectivity in addition to a proprietary aux port, Gigabit Ethernet port, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR wireless technology as well as HDMI, optical and analog outputs. The new system will also utilize new DualShock 4 game controller with integrated touchpad as well as better motion sensing thanks to new PS4 Eye tracking cameras.

because they just recently changed to GDDR5 8GB of RAM and knew it would get leaked anyways.

So why let some hacker get 10 minutes of internet glory for leaking your specs, when you can have a formal meeting a generate a ton of hype?

The fact that they beat MS to the punch is icing on the cake

I hope things won't be too rushed. We saw how that affected MS this generation, and I don't think Sony will have the advantage of an overpriced competitor to save it if they have hardware issues.

When was the last time a console was in production before it was announced? Probably the only one was the Saturn, and look how that turned out.

Yoshida has explained why they didn't show a design. There are certain features that still haven't been finalised so whats the point in showing us something that could end up not making the cut.

It would just serve to piss people off if they see them cutting things out that they previously showed. Like the extra USB slots and HDMI port in the PS3 they showed.

It's the games that are important not what the console looks like. They could give me the dev kit we've sen for all I care, as long as it's got some great games.

Is this tread really necessary? This type of conversation has gone through several cycles in each of the PS4 threads.

I would say it's news worty. The topic wasn't about why they never showed the hardware at the show.

And I haven't read anywhere in the other threads about chip production and delivery to Sony in Q2 ready for assembly in Q3.

Yeah Im glad this topic exists. After not seeing the PS4 I had some doubts lingering Sony may be behind on schedule. Afterall they did show the PS3 18 months before they released it.

Im happy to see everything is on schedule.

Shouldn't this fall into the "PS4 technical discussion" thread then? It's talking about technical aspects of the whole situation.

This was the official introduction of the Playstation 4 brand. The beginning of a long marketing campaign. I don't recall any console being announced and shown final hardware designs at the same time. Look for E3 to be the release of the final hardware design.

I don't think gamers want another prehardware tease like this:

I dont understand why its so important to see the PS4 right now. The only thing that doesn't officially exist of the PS4 is its outer shell. We know the specs, all the important parts of the PS4 are there, Devs have had dev kits for a while and games are well in development for it. For now it's not important to see how aesthetically pleasing the PS4 is

I think it's very clever what Sony has done. Theyve set the ball rolling for E3. everyone is talking about the PS4 but they still havent shown all the cards in their hand yet.
What if the new Xbox was announced at E3 ? it could well steal the show but now everyone is waiting to see the PS4. That will surely at least give Sony it's fair share of the thunder

Why does anyone give a crap what it looks like? Surely the only important things are what's inside and what it's capable of.

Spot on gentlemen...I'd care less if the PS4 came in a plastic bag or a golden box.
