the PS3 currently DOES NOT support DTS HD MA

My point was actually that if you wanted to have HD sound, you need HDMI.
I would say get a player that has both HDMI AND coaxial/optical/analog output. This way you can hook up your system now and when/if you feel you want to try HD sound and true HD image, you can upgrade your AV Receiver at a later time with HDMI.
That is my suggestion. And this would go with all HD products. If you want to best available, HDMI is the way to go. So get something that supports what you got, and upgrade later.

just get the Panasonic DMP-BD30(profile 1.1) or wait a few months for the DMP-BD50(profile 2.0). if the PS3 is not an option those two Panasonics are the only models i can recommend

*ahem* he already said that he does not want a PS3... how is that misleading?
I am not in the habit of tricking people into buying things.
Misread all you want, but I wrote exactly what I mean and nothing else. It will, and other players will. In fact I don't know if any players do handle it right now for that matter. I'm sure some do, but it is something future players are more likely to have.
He can not even get DTS HD MA without using HDMI... so again it is not misleading... did you bother to read anything else written in here?

Bottom line is, if he has an older receiver and wants to have access to all of the higher-end codecs, he's going to have to buy a standalone that can do multi-channel audio over analog cables. With optical or digital coax, he'll be able to get lossy DTS or DD 5.1, or PCM 2 channel.

The PS3 can't do that (multi-channel analog) anyways, so it's kind of a non-issue at this point...

how does a "blu-ray guru" with over 3500 posts not know which players can and can't decode/bitstream HD audio codecs. if you're not sure about the features each player can provide you probably shouldn't be giving advice, because you're not informed enough to give credible advice

I am not a versed on which players have which features. I have never been interested since I have a PS3 and have just never bothered to look it up.
Why are you attacking me?
I gave him sound advice that no one else has argued with. You seem to want to make trouble.
Look, I am very well versed in digital imagery and video, as well as animation and technical aspects of film. I have kept up with the market and the format war and so on. I see no reason why I should know all about the individual players, especially if everyone else agrees that the PS3 is the best player out there. I know that there are some good players coming out, and right now is not the best time to buy one since the new players are coming out soon. I will be looking these up later so I can tell people what is worth while, but there is no need right now.
Perhaps you feel the need to tell all the other people posting that they are not eligible to give advice cause they don't know the technical differences between 1080p and 2k, or DTS and DTS HD MA...

And just for you.. I will look up all the players and find out all the features and analyze their functions to determine which is the best player... cause I have that kind of time.. and my full time job at a respectable company can just wait cause you think i don't know enough about some panny player out there....

vieralink is only for panasonic compatible equipment....

to answer your question of which player to buy,

the Panasonic DMP-BD50 is the player you want because it can internally decoding of HD audio codecs

the DMP-BD30 cannot internally decode, but if you plan to upgrade your receiver this a great option

The samsung BD-P1400 no internal decoding and has a playback issues with several discs, there are threads on this forum about which ones.

So - I'm in the market for a Blu-Ray player. I really would like to avoid the PS3 for many reasons including fan noise, and ease of use.

I was originally looking at the BD P1400 by Samsung (I should say at this point that I am the owner of a 40 inch Samsung M87 LCD). However, I've recently found out about the new Panasonic BD30 which is being released on April 7 here in the UK. Now, I notice that it has a feature called 'Viera Link' which seems very similar to Samsung's 'Anynet+' (I'm guessing this is HDMI-CEC). Being the owner of a Samsung TV can I make use of this Viera Link technology?

Also, I own a Denon AVR-1507 AV receiver. This supports 8ch audio in (with manual inputs) or 5.1 (with digital inputs - I think ). As far as I know, it can do DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD but only through individual channel inputs.

As a new buyer of Blu-Ray and a new member of the Blu-Ray camp, any advice, tips and tricks would be greatly welcomed.

Thanks for reading this pretty lengthy post and I await your responses!

Thanks again!

It sounds like you might want the upcoming DMP-BD50. Check the BD player comparison page: https://www.blu-ray.com/players/compare.php (Region B)

the DMP-BD50 is supposed to only have 5.1 analog output for internal decoding. so it works for your current 5.1 setup. if you need a player that can internally decode 7.1 you may have to step up to a pioneer that's supposed to come out this spring. this would be a lot easier if you were to upgrade your receiver.
