For an individual, it makes little sense. For people with kids it makes a lot of sense: buy a DVD to play in the car and a Blu-ray to play at home. Although I wish Disney would just sell the two in a single package and get rid of the coupon.

Well if you want it in high def as opposed to standard def then you would buy the blu ray, and maybe sell the dvd... yes having both is kind of pointless... but some movies are worth doing this with because with some, the blu ray version simply leaves the dvd version obsolete as far as quality goes.
It's kind of like saying "well why would I get it on dvd, I have it on vhs." |

A handful of Paramount and Disney catalog titles have the $10 rebate form in the Blu-ray box.
That means that if you bought Coyote Ugly or Ghost for example on DVD long ago and wanted to get the Blu-ray...you can upgrade to it. You just need the UPC from the DVD and UPC & receipt of purchase from the BD. A lot of folks did this to get a free (after rebate and before tax) copy of Transformers (2007) on BD during Best Buy's black friday event. I paid about $16 for Coyote Ugly after the rebate. Just gave the DVD copy to my stepdad. |
