Default WII and Onkyo NR-709

I tried to connect our WII to our Onkyo NR-709 receiver via composite cables to see if it would work through the AVR. I get sound but no picture. According to the AVR manual all video should be output through the HDMI main output to the TV. I have it connected to the game input of the AVR.

Any ideas on why I cannot get a picture?

You have to deselect the "GAME HDMI input" in the setup menu on the AVR
  1. On the ONKYO remote push the "SETUP" button
  2. Select "INPUT/OUTPUT ASSIGN" (option 1)
  3. Select "HDMI INPUT" (option 2)
  4. Scroll down to "GAME" push left or right direction button until it shows "---" instead of an HDMI input number.
This should do the trick

Please post if it works or not, If not I'll take another look at the setup menu and try to duplicate your issue on my system and find a fix.

...my $.02

You should use Component cables for the Wii...slightly better picture quality.

Still no picture. I even tried another input. Sound works fine though.

When I get home from work(about 3 hours from now) I'll check mine out again, and the Wii to make sure its not a Wii setting. Mine is hooked up via component cable, won't take much to hook up the old composite cable and try to duplicate your issue.

Just took another look at the 709 specs , it does not upscale component input so it most likely does not upscale composite inputs. It looks like HDMI in HDMI out, composite in composite out , component in component out. The diagrams in the manual also show this.

From the manual;

■“Monitor Out” set to “HDMI Main” or “HDMI Sub”
Video input signals flow through the AV receiver as shown,
with composite video, S-Video, PC IN (Analog RGB) and
component video sources all being upconverted for the
HDMI output. Use these settings if you connect either the
HDMI OUT MAIN or HDMI OUT SUB of the AV receiver
to your TV.
The composite video, S-Video and component video outputs
pass through their respective input signals as they are

Very confusing. The manual appears to say all signals are upconverted through HDMI. The diagram (I cannot paste it) appears to say they don't.

Thanks for your help. I will try connecting the monitor out by composite to see if it works then.

Yeah confusing for sure. The specs on the Onkyo site also show that it doesn't up convert component.... well it doesn't have a check mark there anyway. But there are many typos on the onkyo site.

I'll still mess around with my Wii and avr to see if I can make mine not work , to find a solution.

Something might be a bit askew somewhere in your system. I hooked mine up via composite and it fired right up. Sorry I couldn't help you out.

When my Onkyo was going out I had this issue as well. I had a 606. Glad your calling support.

Onkyo support fixed the problem with a factory reset. I had an HDMI cable connected to the game input. Since I had used this input the AVR defaulted all signals to HDMI. By having nothing plugged into the HDMI game input and having no signal sent to it, the RCA game input now passes the video through the AVR to the TV.
