They should produce every Blu-ray film in "Full Screen". Mite as well get a little bitty screen and sit 3 inches from it !! We spend alot of $$$ on Big@$$ screens that are not being use with the majority of Blu-rays...Not like I wont stop buying them though!!

Thanks a whole bunch you guys!!! Man it's been a while since I checked this thread out. I blame bluray.com forums!!! I never got any messages saying there were any responses to this thread and simply thought interest was lost and it died away. I regret that I wasn't able to see that this thread kept going. I'll be sure to add the movies you guys contributed and I really appreciate it you guys! As well as people like me who are want to refer to lists like this. P.S. Also, I wanted to reaffirm something about this list. Although my list was the first to list 16x9 fullscreen display blurays, there are many out there now that are probably more updated and a higher volume of listed movies. The difference between my list and theirs are that the movies on my list are personally confirmed by members who have physically seen the movies. Those lists simply list movies that are in a specific range of aspect ratio. As you can see in the top quoted post from this post, many movies list their aspect ratio as fullscreen, but are displayed differently when actually watching the movie. Because of this misapplication, from the start, I wanted to make sure the movies I list are certain instead of assumed. So it all comes down to contributions of you, the members, to contribute and confirm what movies should be on the list. So please, post up and thank you very much! I definitely like watching TV shows in 16:9 a lot better than 4:3. Just so you know when you watch some movies in 16:9 you lose some of the original image. The reason 16:9 was chosen as the new standard over 4:3 was because of the rise of many people wanting wide screen. It is in between all of the major (or most used) aspect ratios. 1.85:1, 2.35:1, 2.40:1.
The idea is that if you watch a 4:3 video it will cut only a little of the sides off (piller box) and if you watch something wider it will only cut a little of the top or bottom off (letter box) and 16:9 became the standard for new TV shows. You do still lose some of the original picture in what is now the new full screen 16:9 but it is definitely a lot better than 4:3. I watch all my movies in their original format but not everyone likes it. I watch it because I like seeing what the director of the film wanted me to see. But some movies are already very close already. 1.85:1 is almost 16:9. Only a little sliver of black bars. So I just encourage everyone to pick which aspect ratio is best for them. If they don't mind missing some of the movie 16:9 if you care then original aspect ratio is the way to go. |

I own this classic 1972 Steve McQueen movie too. The box is mislabeled as it's really 2.35:1. Great movie, much better than the 1994 remake which is also 2.35:1. Too bad all the black-bar haters will never get to see it along with a majority of movies ever made. Now if you eliminate the grainy 16:9 movies, and the ones w/o bonus features, what's left?

I didn't see it on the list but Edward Scissorhands is presented in 1.85:1 so it'll take up your whole screen. So does Disturbia and Gone Baby Gone.
Edit: Anything filmed by Tim Burton will fill your screen. I think the only movie he's done that isn't in 1.85:1 is Planet of the Apes. Last edited by AlexCruz; 03-04-2008 at 10:32 AM. |

Resident Evil is listed as 1.85:1, so you can add that to the list. Personally, I think Apocalypto has one of the best looking pictures around, as long as you can handle the violence. Great thread!

We Own The Night seems to be 1.85:1, as I saw only tiny black bars on the top and bottom.

It is unfair to suggest releasing all movies in 16x9 and losing about 25% of the original content (for scope movies) which some people, like myself, love to see. I do not think the content makers would like this idea either. In fact, I wished blu-ray had an anamorphic mode to stretch 2.35:1 content to fill 16x9 pixel structure to get the advantage of maximum pixel resolution. |
