Another horrid review from Blu-ray - almost as horrid as the review for Letter From an Unknown Woman. This is a great film. A poetic masterpiece right from the very soul of America's greatest filmmaker.

I watched 'How Green was my Valley' last night. Unfortunately, I noticed some lip sync issues at the beginning of the film. After a bit, I stopped noticing them. Either my brain got adjusted to it or it got better after about 20-30 minutes into the film.

My A/V receiver has an adjustment for lip sync. I use the lip sync test tone on the WOW disc to perfectly set the delay. I've not had lip sync issues on any other movie.

Maybe the problem is endemic in the film? Has anyone else watched their copy HGWMV and noticed lip sync issues?

Mark

To my knowledge, I didn't notice the issue on my viewing. I was paying close attention to the film as it was the first time I had seen it. Perhaps I missed it or it could be an issue with your copy. Hopefully someone else can chime in with an observation either way.

Most internet video reviewers are teenage kids with teenage kid tastes. They discuss the "depth" of superhero movies at length and movies like "The Quiet Man" and "How Green Was My Valley" soar right over their heads. All they know of older movies are the "greatest hits" selections like "Citizen Kane", "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" and "Casablanca". Even greater films like "Night of the Hunter", "Sunrise", "Greed" and "How Green Was My Valley" aren't even on their radar.

Obviously this particular reviewer doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to cinematography. Gregg Toland's work is wonderful, but every single shot in "How Green Was My Valley" is exquisitely composed and lit in a way that no other movie in the history of cinema has ever matched. You could take just about any frame of the film and frame it as a beautiful still photograph on the wall. It's almost too rich with beautiful imagery. The camerawork on HGWMV is so immaculately crafted, it almost upstages the actors.

Just look at the screenshot gallery... Amazing imagery!

No lip sync issues here either. Sounds like your setup to me.

And $9.98 at Sam's Club, if you can find it (I don't have Costco in my area). The nearest Sam's to me didn't have it when I got Gentleman's Agreement the other day; I went to the other Sam's today figuring they'd have it, and they did.

HGWMV didn't wow me quite as much as last year's Fox Blu of The Grapes of Wrath but this John Ford masterpiece is still an essential purchase for lovers of classic Hollywood cinema. My review: http://whitecitycinema.com/2013/03/1...was-my-valley/

The surround mix will be excellent for the score. However, on the DVD the dialogue in the remix suffered from crackles and sibillance that did not appear in the mono mix. This is a disappointment for me, but I will still buy. Hopefully today's restoration equipment will have attenuated the problems in both mixes.
*sigh* and if someone sat you in a room and played you two tracks of the mono - one lossless and one not, you actually think you'd be able to tell the difference in sound from a film from this era - because you wouldn't.

I'm sorry, but how does a reviewer in this day and age think a transfer like this has ANY possibility of being taken from a 35mm print?

Are you questioning "35mm" or "print"? If it's a theatrical release from 1941, it's almost certainly 35mm; IIRC, 16mm was never used in theaters and they didn't have 70mm back then, much less d-cinema. And though there's a good chance the OCN no longer exists, there's probably still some high-quality prints out there that could produce a good transfer.

Anyone want to buy my Blu-ray for 15 bucks?

This has got to be the most overrated, awful, boring classic I've ever seen - and I love old classics.
