Default Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) fan thread

Hi everyone,

I thought it would be fun to make a thread for ILM fans such as myself.

Here, I'd like to discuss movies of the past, present and future that features or will feature ILM in the end credits.

What is your favorite work of ILM, or your favorite film ILM was involved in?

What is your favorite character they have done, and why, etc.?

What is their weakest film in terms of VFX, and why do you think so?

Be kindly reminded, that this isn't an ILM vs. Weta thread, or something like this.

I have more than 60 films on Blu-ray, that ILM worked on, mostly as the major vendor.

They have done so many great characters, and VFX.

Rango really blew me away.

Davy Jones in the POTC is absolutely amazing as well.

It's far too many great examples to mention, and much easier to point out the disappointments.

To me, the Scorpion king in The Mummy Returns (climax) was unacceptable.
That was truly beneath them, and a perfect example of a bad call.
They should have done it as they did in the next Steven Sommer VFX extravaganza "Van Helsing", where they used the heads of the real actresses, and attached their CG bodies of the vampire brides to them.
I know they had very little time left in the case of TMR, and of the 800+ VFX in the movie ILM only did about 350+shots, but it's no excuse.

I'm currently most excited about Pacific Rim, which appears to have ILM as the sole effects house for the VFX. That's a true rarity these days, where there are so many different effects houses working on those mega blockbusters, so I am very much looking forward to seeing it.

Also, I don't like the Transformer movies, even though I own the first one, because of the fantastic VFX, but the characters make me cringe all the time.

My hope is, that Pacific Rim will be a perfect showcase of ILM's creature work, and hard surface work. I think it's going to be epic, and the first reviews/impressions have been overwhelmingly positive, not only towards the VFX, but also the film in general.

It seems to be very difficult for some reason to make a good film with great VFX. It's mostly one or the other.

Of course, I am also looking forward to the new Star Trek film coming out in May.

For the future, I hope to see another Tornado/Twister film, as the raw, untamed power of nature is something wonderful to witness on the big screen, and the thing they can do now, would be make this incredible, I think.

I very much enjoy the original Twister, but some shots do look dated now, of course. They have definitely refined their particle simulations, well, pretty much everything, so I would like to see water tornadoes, fire tornadoes, and F5 tornadoes that blow us away (cheap pun, I know).

I wouldn't mind another storm movie either.

I could go on and on about it, but what about you?

Have fun discussing. Hope there are some ILM fans on here.

PS: If there already is such a thread, then I am sorry, and please merge it with the existing one.

Transformers is pretty terrible like you said, and with amazing special effects. If you love CGI, do yourself a favour and watch some scenes from the Transformers sequels. The jump in detail from one movie to the next is amazing, and the inclusion of 3D in the third movie finally allows the added depth to separate the Transformers during fight sequences, giving the audience a picture of two complex robots, and not thousands of wires/nuts/bolts/etc. twisting around one another, confusing the viewer.

There was 12 terabytes of CGI data for the first Transformers movie, and 140 terabytes for the second one. Unfortunately, these movies suck. I own all three...

Pacific Rim and Star Trek are my most anticipated films of this year. Not for special effects alone, but the ones shown in the trailers of these two films is what has me watching them over and over again...

One time while living in San Rafael Ca, I was having a beer and playing pool at a place called Johns Bar when a new friend pointed across the street and said look close in that window. I see an outline of what looks like a Stormtrooper. Then he says no other window, I walk up and see Darth Vader. Wtf? He said that building complex is ILM. There were no signs that said so, so I crossed the street to peek in some windows. After Darth I see some Jurassic miniatures then an encased in glass Hook from...Hook! Just then a security guard asked me to leave. Driving by it witch I did a bunch before I found out, you'd never suspect it being ILM.
Since then I think he moved it all to the Presidio in SF.

It was neat to see the back parking lot where they shot some of SW.

I've watched all the making of Transformers put on the ILM Youtube page, and the 3rd one is just unbelievable. I just wished the movies were any good, because the VFX are outstanding.
The shot with the building toppling over is simply mind-blowing.

I hope I can rent these movies on Blu-ray sometime, but I don't think I'll buy them, as owning the first one is enough junk already. Lol

Of course, as I said above, I really hope for great stories in Pacific Rim and ST:Into Darkness.

I wish they would release the following ILM films on Blu-ray:

Memoirs of an Invisible Man (My favorite Invisible Man film)
Death Becomes Her (Great film with then great VFX)
Ghostbusters II
The 'burbs
Baby's Day Out (Sue me. I like that film)
Radioland Murders (Never seen it, but would blind buy it on BD)
A remaster of "Mars Attacks"
A remaster of "Dragonheart" (the first organic CG character in a film)
Casper
Small Soldiers (Love it)
A remaster of "Sleepy Hollow"
Mission to Mars (I like the mood of the film, even though it's eventually quite silly)
The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle (I found it quite hilarious)

Can't wait to get my hands on "Cloud Atlas"

Spicoli - That's awesome! I hung out and had a ciggie next to the Dawn Treader once...

Bluyoda - Great list, even the "dull" films (I like Mission to Mars and Rocky & Bullwinkle too!). I'm sure most people on here would agree with you on Ghostbusters II and hopefully, Death Becomes Her! I might sue you on Baby's Day Out! Lol... Okay, I own three Transformers films, but I have kids, okay!

On ya for checking out those Transformers features though. As I said for a CGI fan they are a must see.

And I'm looking forward to seeing Cloud Atlas. It was MA15+ here and I only go to the movies with my son, so I knew it would be a home viewing. The blu isn't available in Oz yet.

edit: Lol. I looked at your location! What was Cloud Atlas rated on Dagonah? Who decides that anyway? Yoda? And who is he protecting? Yoda? Although, that was a long time ago... Dagobah could be a sprawling metropolis rivalling Coruscant by now!

Yeah, I really wonder when we are going to see a release of Ghostbusters II on Blu-ray, since the sequel doesn't appear to be done anyways.

Aren't you afraid of causing permanent brain damage to your kids by letting them watch Transformers?

ILM did a chase sequence in Cloud Atlas, not the whole show, but I am very interested in the philosophical and spiritual premise of the film.

Pacific Rim and ST: Into Darkness are going to be the most epic ILM films this year.

I pray PR delivers the goods in terms of story too.

That and some of the anime they watch...

One day they were watching Transformers, and me and my wife were watching Armageddon. If you stood where you could hear both of them, there was hardly a moment without explosions.

I guess ILM didn't exist when THX-1138 was released? How did ILM start? I don't like THX-1138, but how great is the ending! Mention of a chase sequence in Cloud Atlas reminded me of this...

Ilm of the past for me has beenThe Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock. love the aesthetic of these films.

Starship Troopers for the ships and tanker bugs

Terminator 2 well practically everything, I thought the t-1000 effect was phenominal. especially in Pescadero

Star Trek 2009 for me was astonishing, did really well there.

so Naturally"Into Darkness" is anticipated is on my list without doubt

I remember reading in our TVGuide some years ago that Masi Oka "Hiro Nakamura" from Heroes was involved with ILM for many years, I think from a programming perspective. I thought that was cool!.

You like ILM, I didn't know you like ILM, why haven't you mentioned the fact you liked ILM before? Wait, you have mentioned you like ILM? You've mentioned it quite a bit that you like ILM? How have I missed the fact that you like ILM, maybe you should mention that you like ILM more, that way I would never forget the fact that you like ILM, because lord knows how I've manage to forget the fact that you like ILM...

Oh dear. Lol

ILM was created for Star Wars in 1975.

I find THX very interesting, though it's not a film I want to put on every night, but it is thought-provoking, and philosophical, and yes, the ending is probably the best ending of all times! It gets me every single time, especially on Blu-ray! The extras are terrific too, particularly the documentary on Zoetrope.

I think I saw the old ST at some point in my youth, but I can't remember much, expect for the now legendary, and then revolutionary genesis scene.
The first CG scene in a motion picture. Wasn't that in The Wrath of Khan?

Straship Troopers didn't have much ILM work. Only a bunch of scenes, one of them being Ibanez flying to the big ship, that she is going to maneuver.

T2 was a landmark film for CGI effects, after Teh Abyss, and before Jurassic Park.

yep thats it, that was actually done by Pixar, when they were part of ILM.

I'm of the very strong opinion that ILM's work on Davey Jones still hasn't been surpassed, in terms of photorealistic CG character. In 48fps, Gollum in the Hobbit got real damn close but it's still not Davey Jones. To me, he's the true landmark of CG character design and execution.

My favorite ILM past work? Gosh, there's so many to choose from. If I had to pick only one though, it's gotta be there work on Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. There's a reason Lucas hasn't really messed with that film's effect shots. There were that damn awe inspiring back in '80. Just gorgeous work top to bottom on that picture.

I'm obviously very much looking forward to their work on Pacific Rim and Into Darkness but I gotta say, I want to see ILM do another Rango. What they did with Rango is nothing short of otherworldly. It easily rivals the best of Pixar and maybe even surpasses the best of Pixar. There are times that I've watched Rango on BD without the sound on, just so I could concentrate on the visual. IT. IS. STUNNING.

I hope that under Disney that ILM doesn't get allowed to do another full on animated picture. We need more competition in that department and ILM could provide that.

At the end of the day, I don't care what everyone in the industry says, ILM's work still hasn't been surpassed yet. I mean, say what you will about the Transformers films but ILM's work in that is just...

The space battles in ROTJ are incredible, and probably still the best ever put on screen. They are still creative, only more tools have been added.

I have ILM's Into the Digital Realm, and The Art of Innovation, the latest book is on the way.

I pretty much agree on Davy Jones. I think it's a combination of things, that made he so memorable:

He is a great character, played by the fantastic Bill Nighy, animated by the incredible animators at ILM, and supervised by the legendary John Knoll, as well as directed by the hard to please Gore Verbinski.

Just outstanding!

I think you meant does get allowed to do another feature animation film.

Yeah, I hope so too. It's far beyond anything all the other studios, including Pixar, have ever done.

It's unparalleled!
