Amazon claim not to offer free supersaver release date delivery without paying for first class, but unfortunatley only they have the code for the hobbit desolation of smaug preview.I was wondering also when do they get it to you for?

Many thanks.

Play.com are only going to be a marketplace from now on and not have their own stock. Think of them more like Ebay now.

I've gone with Amazon as I'm a prime member, but sainsburys are normally quite good now.

Because Play.com will not be a retail chain after the end of this month. It will just be a store front for 3rd party sellers.

Wow that SUCKS!

So where is the best place to order online now to get something either before or on the release date?

Amazon is like a week later at best for preorders!

Some Amazon pre orders off release day delivery but you have to pay

Some people got Who Framed Roger Rabbit today from Zavvi, mine never showed up but Zavvi are are one of the worst I've used so only go to them for exclusives.

other than that theres just lots of smaller less well known online stores that I've never used, so I'm not sure if there actually is anywhere that gets stuff to you early/day of release for free anymore

It's crap! HMV & Play always delivered my stuff early.

Hmmm. So what happens with all the Play-exclusive steelbooks? Will they find their way onto the general market, or simply disappear?

Meantime, another question: I've just ordered the steelbook of The Hobbit. Does anyone know if the Blu banner at the top will be on it (I hope not), or is there in the ads only for display and marketing purposes?

You need to go and have a read up on to the steelbook section all the play.com exclusives have been on sale with other retailers for a number of weeks. amazon and zavvi have been selling them

Thanks Big Nick — you mean the steelbook forum on this site ?

To be honest, I hadn't been checking into this stuff because I'm in Australia and Play doesn't ship here — I thought they were all out of reach for me.

Edited to add:
Just found some of the ones I'd been hankering for on Zavvi. On special too! A couple of the ones I wanted seem to have gone out of availability — they're available through eBay or 3rd-party on Amazon, but at kinda crazy prices, so I'll let them go. Mate, thanks again for the reply.

As BigNickUK says, they have been distributed elsewhere - the Universal steels seemed to go to everyone (at least to Amazon.co.uk and Zavvi), Zavvi got the Paramount and Fox titles as exclusives. All the old stock though, none of the OOP ones turned back up.

With regards to the banner - it won't be printed on there.

I hope you're right, Buddy. Someone said something similar about the Flash Gordon steelbook, as I recall — but there the banner is, large as life.

Not a deal-breaker, of course, just a preference.

As for The Hobbit, we've got the same steelbook coming out here in Australia — but about twice the price, and with a DVD copy bunged in there as well.

True - but this one looks fairly safe. Warners haven't had a printed banner since Green Lantern and all of their ones since have been the same as The Hobbit - 'printed' blue banner on the temp artwork, nothing on the finished product (Dark Knight Rises, Batman Begins/Dark Knight double pack, Sherlock Holmes 2, etc).

The Canadian version had the exact same temp artwork but turned out well. So it's 99% certain that it'll be banner-free

Does anyone know if the 3D version will be split over 2 discs like the American release or is it just on one disc?

A 3D film longer than about 2 hours contains too much data to fit onto one disc, unless it's severely compressed — and that wouldn't be pretty.

So yes, two discs.

In fairness, it's one of the best looking Blu-rays I've ever seen, so it can be done on one disc at least!
