Passion, a co-production between Germany and France, is an erotic thriller in the tradition of Dressed to Kill and Basic Instinct. The film tells the story of a deadly power struggle between two women in the dog-eat-dog world of international business. Christine possesses the natural elegance and casual ease associated with one who has a healthy relationship with money and power. Innocent, lovely and easily exploited, her admiring protegée Isabelle is full of cuttingedge ideas that Christine has no qualms about stealing. They're on the same team, after all... Christine takes pleasure in exercising control over the younger woman, leading her one step at a time ever deeper into a game of seduction and manipulation, dominance and humiliation. But when Isabelle falls into bed with one of Christine's lovers, war breaks out.

What the hell happened to this movie? I saw a US trailer for it, and was kinda looking forward to seeing DePalma return to his roots... and then, nothing.

(Sigh) Well at least we are getting a blu-ray release.

eOne owes the rights of the film in North America. It is still labelled as "coming soon" on their website. Let's hope it doesn't go straight to video and VOD since I would love to see it on the big screen. BTW, Pino Donaggio's main theme for the film is lovely.

I just pre ordered mine. I guess if it has forced French subs I will just have to live with it! (I also threw in that huge Agnes Varda boxset I have been meaning to get.)

Amazon.fr preparing for dispatch now...

Hope the subs are removable but not a disaster if they're not. There seems to be some special features, a making-of for instance.

I don't know if to wait for a US release (who knows if there will even be one for blu ray) or order this if it does not have the forced French subtitles.

CONFIRMATION

Our screener arrived in the mail tonight. The release is Region-B "locked" and comes with optional French and French SDH (color format) subtitles. Extras are Making of Featurette and Original Trailer. I have updated the disc's profile on the site. (Click on the link at the top of the page).

Our review won't be up before Friday because higher priority titles arrived and they need to be covered first. The next 3-4 days are already booked.

Passion Blu-ray REVIEW

Ignore the negative reviews this film has been getting. It is a solid De Palma* thriller, lensed by one of the best cinematographers still in the business, José Luis Alcaine.

*It is not exactly a remake of Corneau's film.

The german spoken in the film is somewhat important to the narrative. It's not too big of a deal though and you'll survive without it, but if you want the full experience, you should wait for a properly english version. Unless you know german or french. Or in the case of the scandinavian version, a scandinavian language.
