If the DVD is non-anamorphic then it's definitely unwatchable.
Otherwise DVD is generally still acceptable. |

I still treasure my DVD collection, but I can't deny the amazing quality that is Blu-ray. I love, love, love classic film and for some odd reason, I prefer to buy classic films on DVD. Other than that, it's Blu-ray all the time. I just wish the packaging were better!

I have alot of DVDs left, I have all the MGM Midnite Movies, the Grindhouse and Exploitation Cinema releases and Criterions and stuff like that. I don't care what format something is on as long as I can view it when im inclined to do so. I do choose blu-ray 99% of the time for a movie but will buy DVD if the only blu-ray release is cut or doesn't include my preffered cut of the movie, like Fantastic Four and Shadow: Dead Riot/Flesh For The Beast Grindhouse versions

I can't believe some of these posts.
I'm a film fan, not a format fan. I just want to watch movies, and the prices on DVD's now has allowed me to acquire so many over the last few years. The important stuff (story, character, writing) gets through no matter what format you're watching it on. Hell, I still watch VHS from time to time. I just don't understand why I would buy a Blu-ray of a film if I could get two or three DVD's for the same price. |

I do understand because I went through a similar thing with vhs and dvd. at first, the difference wasn't a big deal but after watching only dvds for a while, I had a real hard time watching vhs again. but I don't find it to be as big an issue here. first, the PS3 upconverts the dvd so I am getting much better quality out of it compared to just playing it on a dvd player. plus, it depends on what I am watching. I try and get newer movies on bluray for the quality but for a lot of things, getting them on bluray doesn't actually matter since the video quality just isn't there to begin with so dvd works just fine. there are still a lot of shows being released that were not done in HD so a bluray isn't going to make them look better or anything. I do notice more the lower resolution on dvd movies compared to bluray but it doesn't stop me from watching movies on dvd.

First off I would say that I more than mostly agree with the OP on this point.
Blu-ray is without a doubt a far superior experience to DvD. The one thing that will always bring me back to DvD without complaints is the catalog of titles that I personally love and can't live without. Anyone who knows me on this site longer than 3 minutes knows that movies like D.E.B.S. are dear to my heart and just aren't getting the hi-def treatment (although I could easily argue that Hi-Def would probably work AGAINST D.E.B.S.) Certain movies are so good (at least to me) that I don't care about the picture quality or even the surround and I can only hope that all of them get the hi-def treatment one day. |

I love old B&W films and there are a number of Universal Horror and thriller films of the 30's, 40's, and 50's that I must watch. Same goes with a lot of the 50's scifi films. War of the Worlds, When Worlds Collide, the Leach Woman, This Island Earth, Frankenstein meets the Wolfman, and so many more deserve to be seen from time to time regardless of the format. It's doubtful that all 14 of Basil Rathbone's great Sherlock Holmes films will ever see the light of Day on Blu and that is one treasured set. |

I still watch DVDs if I really like the film or series and there is no BD yet. However, the low-res and the compression artifacts are often very noticeable once you're spoiled by HD. Which is kind of annoying. For that reason, I only watch DVDs on my old 32" display from 3-4 metres away.

This is why I refuse to buy that Miracle Mile DVD-R from Amazon. But, yeah, DVD is generally still watchable. I get rid of the ones that come in combo packs but I don't deprive myself of watching a film or TV show if it's only available on DVD. It's just plain wrong. |

one thing I said in another thread that I think applies here is that it all depends on what you are watching. there are some things that I don't want too clear for several reasons - how I originally saw it/remember it, it gives away details that we shouldn't see, etc. The Twilight Zone is a great example. I love it on bluray but the dvd is a little closer to how I remember watching it as a kid so that brings back warm, fuzzy memories. there are a lot of movies that are like that as well. as a movie fan, I like that I can see these movies in prestine quality and see all the work that people put in to making this movie but seeing them in a little less than perfect quality does have its benefits too.
plus, when it gets too clear, you can see things like make-up and such that you didn't see before because they were considering that lack of resolution when they did the makeup and use it to their advantage. that is the reason why so many movies even into the 80's now need digital wire removal - now that they have cleaned them up, you can see the wires that blended into the background before. Trek is a great example of this(both TOS and TNG) - look at how many matte paintings looked fine in older releases but now stand out as paintings in the remastered versions. "see the movie/show as it was meant to be seen" isn't always true - seeing these on bluray can actually take away from the movie. |

I could barely watch The Lost World Jurassic Park.
It was on Blu Ray but man, what a sorry film. Has to be the worst ever Spielberg movie. It was just so sad. Think Julianne Moore was supposed to be attractive?... I think she was sort of attractive in Boogie Nights but in this movie ... nothing. |
