Question is, why wouldn't you pre order one?

Companies like to limit the supply to create publicity about how fast their new product is selling out.

I expect you could walk in to a shop day one and try and buy it over the counter, but I wouldn't try it.

Yes or at least it should. Preorder orders are always put in with the manufactures by the store early so there is enough stock on hand to cover them. Any cancelled preorders just get added to store stock.

Where did you pre-order PS4 already?

If you want a PS4 on launch day, I would suggest pre-ordering it. I did that with the PS3, and I received 1 of 18 or so PS3s allocated to my local Gamestop. They called me, and I strolled in and picked it up. No drama.
