Die bad (2000) directed by Seung-wan Ryoo and starring his brother Seung-beom Ryu (Arahan, Crying Fist, City of Violence).
It's extremely low budget but it's very unique with its approach of 4 episodes that all tie together and the fight scenes are great too, especially near the ending. I knew back then that the director would make some great films in the future and pretty much made me start loving Korean cinema. |

Nope. I thought it was lousy, too – disjointed and badly written (trying to be too many things and not doing any of them particularly well). I remember when it was over thinking: "Well, there's one I'm not going to waste my time watching again."

I have yet to actually see this. Been meaning to buy the Korean release, but other things always get priority. From what i can tell, people either love it or hate it...so it's intriguing to me, to say the least. I'm not a huge fan of CGI "monster" films, but i don't mind them if they're done right.

Is Pieta worth a blind-buy? I'm not that big a fan of Kim Ki Duk but I respect some of his films. I'm also a huge fan of Chanwook Park Kim Jee Woon though...so what are the odds I'd like this film?

It's a blind buy for me, too. I have watched some of Kim Ki Duk's previous work, and i loved it. Out of all the Korean films i have watched so far, there have only been one or two i didn't really like, but still enjoyed. I am buying Pieta on instinct, and what i have gathered from reviews / articles on the film. Same goes for the other two.

Two out of 3 order came in today. Still waiting for "Bedevilled" to arrive. I LOVE the slipcover on Pieta, albeit a little "messy" looking around the Blu-ray Disc logo. That's the Korean release of "The Pianist", in case anyone's wondering.

Nice one SBC28
![]() It's bank holiday here in the UK today (and Friday gone) so no deliveries for me, hopefully tomorrow as I'm waiting for two BIG packages from abroad ![]() Make sure you watch Sunny first, and watch it with your misses/sisters/mum if possible (you'll know what I mean after you've finished watching it lol), saw it three times already and I never get bored watching it hehe |

![]() I plan on watching Sunny as soon as possible. I can't see myself enjoying it, but i felt the same about Castaway on the Moon, and i love that film. Sooo, we'll have to see. I'm pretty excited to watch Pieta, though. I can't wait ![]() |

I spent most of last year working through the Korean Film Archive's youtube channel:
http://www.youtube.com/user/KoreanFilm The channel is based off of their top 100 list: http://www.koreafilm.org/feature/100.asp Matching up the titles on the KOFA website to their youtube channel can be challenging, and not all films are available, but some of my favorites were Black Hair, Aimless Bullet, A Romantic Papa, Flame in the Valley, Deep Blue Night and A Road to Sampo. The two directors that I seemed to enjoy the most were Lee Man-Hee and Im Kwon-Taek. I'll admit it was a struggle to go through the channel since a lot of the movies were poor quality and not very interesting to me. But I thought I'd share since it could be appealing to some to see how Korean cinema has progressed since about 1950. |
