Question Blu-ray re-editions with Dolby Digital?

I'm surprised why some re-editions from majors are still being released with Dolby Digital 5.1 instead of DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, anyone could explain why we can't get any better Blu-Ray sound than this? For those who have na AV Receiver there's a huge difference.
It was supposed that in 2013 a re-edition, the original sound was upgraded, and Dolby Digital was a old codec for recent movies.

Goodfellas with Dolby Digital 5.1

Italian Job with Dolby Digital 5.1
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-I...Blu-ray/41698/

and there's a lot more...

That example you're using for Goodfellas isn't really a re-release. It's the same disc as the original but in a Steelbook casing.

Question

Yes, but why Warner Brothers didn't remastered this Blu-Ray yet for an upgrade? In my point of view a Blu-Ray with Dolby Digital 5.1 it's considered old in 2013, and Goodfellas deserve a better edition, with better sound, the re-editions are a good opportunity to improve. This film is the 15th at top IMDB.

Studios would rather cheap it out, then to go the extra mile, by giving consumers a quality product.

The bottom line is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Anything that cuts cost will raise profits.

I was kinda gobsmacked when WB suddenly re-released Unforgiven in a digibook, but with the exact same disc as we already had — which meant only Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.

As DD5.1 goes, the audio track on this one is better than most, and maybe that's why WB didn't bother upgrading it; but since the image transfer is near-incredible, it would have elevated the release to something else again if the audio had been lossless.

Canadian releases (they almost always have French due to Quebec) still have often the French track in DD 2.0/2.1 while in France the same audio is available in DD 5.1 or DTS-HD Master 5.1. I do accept that the French audio track is not lossless as it's a secondary language on the BD, but DD 2.0/2.1 ? It's kind of a joke.

You'll probably see all BD with lossless tracks at the end of the life of the BD format, and for some titles, you'll never have anything better than the lossy track. It's marketing. Else, they would release only one version of the BD...

Similar case, most DVDs started to include 5.1 French at the end of the life of the format.

I bought a few early blu ray titles like 16 Blocks, Street Kings and Goodfellas with only a standard DD 5.1 track but since I've bought a home cinema system I refuse to buy any titles that don't have an HD track.

There are a few titles I'd like such as The Warriors and Sahara but I'm not paying the money for a half assed upgrade.

Street Kings is DTS-HD MA 5.1 and 16 Blocks is available from France (Region B locked) with better PQ and AQ.

The German release of Sahara comes with with a DTS HD MA 5.1 audio track. It is Region B locked though.

So does the French release, but I am not sure what its region coding is.

Thumbs up

Great news, the new edition of Italian Job 2003 has DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 instead of Dolby Digital 5.1, at least all european editions, wait until July.

I refuse to buy The Italian Job until it is properly remastered. I owned the HD DVD and it looked awful and the BD is simply a port of the same poor transfer. I also hope we see a release of the original one day.
