Ironically its European shows like The Killing, Wallander, Spiral, The Bridge and Montalbano that are currently popular in the UK but here's a few that come to mind:
Hazell, The Chinese Detective, The Beiderbecke Trilogy (one of the greatest TV series), Callan, Public Eye, The Sweeney. Network have issued quite a few of these on DVD |

Just remembered one of the very best, Between The Lines. The third series is a mess as BBC management were trying to kill the programme

I don't know which have been released in America so you'd need a DVD or blu ray player that does multi region. DVD players are dirt cheap but multi region blu players are either top end mods like Oppo or cheap supermarket specials with handset hacks. Check the hardware forum for something that meets your needs and budget. Check your display can come with the European PAL signal or see if the player transcodes to NTSC.
If i had to pick one it'd be Between The Lines for its complex portrayal of police corruption |

I'll have to give some of these a shot, US detective shows are a very predictable 3 acts.
someone gets killed, they get a list of suspects they close on in their main suspect shocker! it's not the person and through some stroke of luck they catch the real baddie |

Another good show that is currently airing it's 3rd series is Scott & Bailey.
I was always a huge fan of Dempsey & Makepeace as a child (back in the 80's)... you can get all 4 series on DVD. |

Zen was a victim of management change at the BBC. I thought it was a failure due to short running times, Cabal was gutted and missed out much of the book. Dibdin's books use Zen as a way for an outsider to observe the diverse regions of Italy and faithful films would have required many locations at huge cost. Dead Lagoon is a brilliant book and I'd recommend it to anyone.
The Swedish Wallander is much better than the UK version, just compare the two versions of The Fifth Woman. Rolf Lassgard or Krister Henriksson are both equally good. Box sets are avilable from Arrow. I also recommend the film of Jar City, the bleak Icelandic thriller. There's more than frozen gloom to Iceland, try comedy series The Night Shift, The Day Shift and The Prison Shift, all very funny Tonight BBC4 starts a four part of Arne Dahl's The Blinded Man |
