Default ps3 FW update 2.20 to allow 'portable copy' ??

Quote:
Sony announced last week it plans to release new firmware for its PlayStation 3 video game console. The new update will expose new capabilities in the PS3's Blu-ray Disc player.

The free update for PS3 users in North America was to be posted by the weekend.

Blu-ray Disc is the heir apparent to the crown of high-definition optical media formats. The format battled against HD DVD, which manufacturer Toshiba recently discontinued.

The updated firmware enables Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, or BD-Live, to be supported on the PS3. BD-Live enables Blu-ray Disc makers to incorporate additional interactive features including downloadable video content, ringtones, games and more.

The firmware also exposes "Portable Copy," which enables PS3 users to copy a standard-definition version of the Blu-ray movie to a PlayStation Portable (PSP). You can transfer music and photo playlists from the PS3 to the PSP and use the PSP as a remote control for music playback using "Remote Play." DivX and WMV playback functionality has been improved, along with new Internet browser settings and additional AV settings.

in other words , this is beyoned awesomenessnessnesssnessnessenesess

Now if only they would allow you to keep a 'Portable Copy' on the system.

I wouldn't mind saving something like Family Guy Presents: Blue Harvest to the HD.

Two threads on same topic

Anyway, I think they misunderstand how this is going to work. Sony Pictures discs with "portable copy" will include an already encoded PSP version of the film on the BD disc. The new firmware for the PS3 will simply allow the PS3 to "see" the portable copy file and copy it over to the PSP. It isn't going to work on existing discs, and I believe only Sony Pictures is currently planning to include PSP versions on upcoming discs.

Note: At least that's my understanding based on previous statements from insiders.

The PS3's demonstrating BD-Live and Portable Copy may have been running the same System Software at CES. I don't know if anyone checked..

Default PS3 2.20 update to offer portable copy of Blu-ray films to PSP?

I think it's time to get a PSP.

Quote:
If PCWorld is correct, then it looks like Sony's pending, PS3 2.20 firmware will have at least one little surprise for movie buffs. As if the inclusion of Blu-ray's BD-Live interactivity and the removal of the 2GB DivX and WMV file-size cap wasn't enough, PCWorld says that you can also expect the introduction of portable copy. With it, users will be able to copy a PSP formatted (and DRM'd) version of the film directly to their PSP -- no UMD required. Right, just like we saw demonstrated live back at CES in January.

Update: There's a rumor that Sony's portable copy would transcode any Blu-ray film into a PSP version. That's not how we understand it. The firmware update would just allow the PS3 to "see" the portable copy already burned into some Blu-ray discs and then make it available for transfer to your PSP. Think Digital Copy for Sony's gear, not Apple's.

Yeah, it is kind of like Family Guy: Blue Harvest. Some discs will have a digital copy, but most won't. (At least not yet).
I am ok with this, but I prolly won't use it much. I rather have it on my ipod, so if I can get it, I will have to see how I can play with the file format to change it.
