Default PS3 Firmware 2.20 to enable Portable Copy

Quote:
PS3 Firmware 2.20 to enable Portable Copy

We previously gave you a heads-up on what could be the features of Sony PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.20. Now, a new report ups the ante by revealing yet another cool feature.

PC World recently revealed that PS3 FW 2.20 will support "Portable Copy". Essentially, it strengthens the bond of Sony's console with its handheld counterpart, the PlayStation Portable, by allowing movie sharing.

Portable Copy lets users create standard-definition versions of Blu-ray movies and transfers them to the PSP.

This goes with other enhancements that BD-Live, otherwise known as Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, will bring.

We'll keep an eye out for more information on this exciting development. Keep checking back here with us to make sure you don't miss it.

UPDATE 2 :

Quote:
PSP Portable Copy may not arrive with PS3 Firmware 2.2

Everyone's been talking about the PSP Portable Copy which will allow users to copy Blu-Ray movies from their PlayStation 3 to their PSPs. However, some new information has come up that indicates that this new feature will not be in the PlayStation 2.20 firmware update.

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) recently contacted Kotaku to say that the upcoming firmware update will not have Portable Copy support. This new information appears to contradict previous announcements regarding the service.

At CES 2008, Sony announced that PSP Portable Copy will be implemented when BD Live is introduced to the PlayStation 3. When details about the PlayStation 3 2.20 Firmware were revealed, Sony said that the update will have Blu-Ray Profile 2.0, otherwise known as BD Live. So if the firmware will contain BD Live, then the PSP Portable Copy service would also be going live.

Granted , things may have changed since CES 2008, thus prompting Sony's correspondence with Kotaku. Hopefully, Sony will decide to release an official statement to clarify this issue once and for all.

I agree. I wonder if it will work on Playstation Home when that comes out. It would be cool to be able to save it on the PS3 and stream it to Home.

I think they are misunderstanding how portable-copy is planning to work from Sony Pictures. Sony Pictures discs with "portable copy" will include an already encoded PSP version of the film on the BD disc. The new firmware for the PS3 will simply allow the PS3 to "see" the portable copy file and copy it over to the PSP. It isn't going to work on existing discs, and I believe only Sony Pictures is currently planning to include PSP versions on upcoming discs.

Yes, agreed. Only on certain blu-ray movies that supports it.

It won't let users "create standard-definition versions of Blu-ray movies", the portable must be already provided on the disc before you can transfer them to the PSP.

A portable psp sized movie would only be about 300-400MBs. Not to mention, its not gonna be saved on your hard drive - its gonna copy directly from the disc to the psp... wirelessly.

It'll work on your 20 gig.

EDIT:

Unless, wait...
The 20 gig doesnt have wi-fi. Is that what you meant?

Is remote play not available on the 20 gig?

the 20gb does not have Wi-fi. So I'm trying to figure out if Sony allows sharing via the USB cable.

Not sure on that. If you get a USB card reader that's PS3 compatible, though, you should be able to use that to copy the portable copy to a memory stick to use on your PSP.

Also, didn't they enable Ethernet Bridge WiFi support in a previous update for the 20GB model, in order to allow PSP connectivity that way?

it doesn't matter, i think you're confusing the portable copy feature with remote play. this has nothing to do with remote play. USB is the intended method of video transfer from blu-ray/harddrive to the memory stick in your PSP

Does this mean, have the PS3 hardwired to a wireless router and have the PSP connected via wi-fi?

How will people be able to transfer the portable copy to their PSP from a wi-fi enabled PS3?

Edit: I see now. Thanks

when you download a PSP game or demo from the playstation store on your PS3, you have to connect your PSP with a USB cable to transfer the game or demo to your PSP. the same principle applies to portable movies. connect PSP to PS3 with USB then copy. this applies to all models of PS3

I didn't know you had to connect the PSP with the USB cable. Maybe I'll buy a game or 2 off the PSN store, heh. Again, thanks.

I think this was more for remote play, actually. You should be able to use a USB cable for transferring the video.

As for remote play... yes, if your firmware is up to date, you can hardwire the PS3 into a wireless router and connect the PSP via WiFi to the router (using the "private networking" setting) and have it work just the same as if the PS3 had WiFi.

You may be able to use this method to copy video also... but it seems it would be a lot easier to just connect a USB cable.

EDIT: Per TurboLazer above... I would assume you will need to connect the PSP directly. Thanks for the tip.
