Vader has a great intro but not as memorable as a villian - especially now with that no scream he does. most memorable right now for me is the Joker in The Dark Knight. no real motivation for him to do what he does other than to see the reaction it gets, always seems to be one step ahead of Batman. the guys is just nuts.

Was going to say Darth Vader until Hayden Christensen turned him into a whiney girl. Hans Gruber gets my vote.

Most memorable? Darth Vader. I like his mystery and the pure evil of the dark side.

Most terrifying? Let's see...

2008 Academy Award Winner, Best Supporting Actor:
[Show spoiler]

Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh

2009 Academy Award Winner, Best Supporting Actor:
[Show spoiler]

Heath Ledger as The Joker

2010 Academy Award Winner, Best Supporting Actor:
[Show spoiler]

Christoph Waltz as Col. Hans Landa

2011 Academy Award Winner, Best Supporting Actor:
[Show spoiler]

Christian Bale as Dicky Eklund DAWWW! broke the villain chain!!

All kidding aside, Chigurh takes the cake.

And how did we get this far in the thread without mentioning the T-1000?? So terrifying and classic! Should have been on the poll...

Ooooh, such a hard choice. Since we're dealing with most memorable, I stuck with Vader. It's too darn hard to forget about a guy with a black suit, cape, mask, helmet, and resperator. We haven't forgotten about him for more than thirty years!

The Joker came next for me, but just about everybody in this thread are awesome bad guys.

The scariest nightmare I ever had was the T-1000 murdering me over and over again. The guy's just so invincible and unstoppable. It's not like you can shoot him or stab him or stick a pipebomb in his guts, because he always reforms and comes back at you. And he takes on other people's forms. He should go down as the perfect villain.

Darth Sidious, father of Darth Vader, and grandfather of Luke and Leia Skywalker.

EIDT: Since Darth Sidious was no option ,

I voted for Vader.

Darth Sidious is the ultimate bad guy though. Vader is a harmless kitten in comparison.

I voted other. The ones mentioned have been great, but I wanted to go with one I haven't seen mentioned. Jason Isaacs as Col. Tavington from "The Patriot" srikes me as a particularly memorable villian, not of all time but certainly an evil one.

I gotta go with Norman Bates. Anthony Perkins' performance as the psychotic with serious oedipal issues is about as iconic as they come. I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet.

The scene where he chases the Connors and T-800 in their car on foot and leap on with the crowbar arms still gives me chills to this day.

This is a pretty shallow, obvious list.

I wouldn't say he is necessarily the most memorable, but one of my favorites...

Well of course it's obvious. It's a list of most memorable villians.

One wouldn't really expect to look at a most memorable list and think 'doh, right, I forgot all about that one...good call'.

Yeah, I think the question is too broad and obviously something really popular like Darth Vader or the Joker is going to win.

A better way to do it would be to separate genres: so best sci-fi villain, best horror villain, best action villain, best comedic villain, etc. Otherwise there's hardly any debate or interest because the outcome is pretty inevitable.

I'm not dogging the thread; it is what it is. Maybe "memorable" was too broad a term to use to begin with.

Maleficent ('Sleeping Beauty') and the Wicked Witch of the West ('The Wizard of Oz') are two most memorable to me.

Honarable mentions: G'Mork ('Neverending Story'), Judge Doom ('Who Framed Roger Rabbit'), Magua ('The Last of the Mohicans').
