Best Phantasm Movie (And Rank Them) - Blu-ray Forum

With the recent release of Scream Factory's new Phantasm II Blu-ray, I wonder how many Phantasm fans are around here and what's everyone's favorite of the series and how the community here ranks them. This is my all-time favorite Horror series and one that sadly never gets the attention it deserves.

Phantasm II is easily my favorite. As great as the original is with it's weird and creepy dream-like atmosphere and nightmarish imagery, I feel Phantasm II far surpassed it with a much darker tone and macabre atmosphere, The Tall Man being even more malevolent and it's great action scenes. I feel Phantasm II was an instance of a bigger budgeted sequel using the bigger budget to enhance the vision of the original movie in a big way and not simply use it all on flashy effects.

Phantasm IV I liked for the darker tone and the return to the more serious mood of the first two, as well as the all-around strange quality of it and how it shed insight into who The Tall Man was without giving away too much. The third was definitely my least favorite due to the excessive comedy in it, but it was still a lot of fun.

I'd rank them as:

Phantasm II
Phantasm
Phantasm IV: Oblivion
Phantasm III: Lord Of The Dead

Phantasm is the best... no doubt

Phantasm 2 was a good sequel but nowhere near the novelty of the original

after that the movies sucked sorry to say.....

I thought III and IV were terrible and Phantasm doesn't hold up that well anymore. II is the only decent one imo which I could watch over and over again...

When I watch them I always end up watching all 4 movies in order.

I love this franchise. It probably ranks only behind Friday the 13th & Halloween for me as far as horror franchises go. I wish they release the other 3 films on blu. This is how I rank them:

Phantasm II
Phantasm III: Lord Of The Dead
Phantasm
Phantasm IV: Oblivion

Part 4 is confusing as heck but I love how they have deleted footage from the first film. A lot of people dont like part 3 but I love it. Great horror franchise in my book. Got Em!!

I just finished with a marathon of the series, my ranking is still the same and probably always will be. I think they're all superb in their own way, wish we'd get a fifth already.

Can't wait for the upcoming Ravager, still unreal to think a new movie is finally happening all this time later. I have a feeling it'll easily be my new third favorite after the first two.

There was a time when I would have said 2. I'm changing my stance significantly. I say 1, then 4, then 2......................then 3. I will rewatch them all before 5 comes out though. At that point, I will vote.

Phantasm IV is under-rated. III is the weakest but deserves some respect for bringing back the sci-fi/fantasy aspects that seemed to be missing from the first sequel.
