Default Will I have problems importing a region A PS3?

I have the opportunity to get hold of a PS3 from the USA to use over here in the UK. What sort of problems might I have in doing this? I know im going to need a step down power converter and obviously it will only play region A discs but what about downloading updates will this be a problem

Aside from the power conversion issue, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Do note that if you're going to buy Blu-ray movies that some discs in Europe are region coded B and will not play in a US PlayStation 3 (though from what I understand quite a lot of discs are mislabelled and are actually region ABC even though they only show region B).

Firmware updates are (as far as I am aware) linked to the internal regioning of your unit and not your geographic location, so it will receive the proper US firmware when you update if you've got it connected to the Internet. Otherwise, if you're manually handling the updates via disc, make sure you obtain the North American firmware, and not the European.

The games themselves shouldn't care; Blu-ray games are region free, and you can put any PS3 game in any PS3 and have it run.

PlayStation 2 games, if you're going to pick up an 80GB/20GB/60GB unit from the USA, will not play if they are not from North America region 1. The 40GB unit obviously has no backward compatibility, so it's a moon point in that case. Be warned on this if you have a large collection of PS2 games.
