Default Why is Duane Reade the most popular drug store?

Here in NYC, there is a Duane Reade store in every block. It seems like they're so popular. I'm assuming they're popular because a lot of people like to shop there, which I don't understand why. Their prices are EXPENSIVE. Rite Aid and CVS have better prices (and better selection, I might add), but there are fewer stores around.

So, how did Duane Reade become so popular? Do people like spending more money??

I've never even heard of them until this thread.

All we have is CVS here.

You guys never heard of Duane Reade??

I have yet to find a block without one. They're all over the place and I'm sick of it. I wish I was in a location that had a lot of CVS stores. They're much better.

There are Walgreen's as far as the eye can see here. Never even heard of Duane Reade.

Yeah I see Duane Reade all over the place here!
Do they only sell, like, medical drugs? Or also other stuff?
Why is there a need for so many pharmacies in New York? There is not a block without one! Where I live (back home in the Netherlands), there are only 2 small pharmacies (combined maybe the 10% the size of 1 big drug store in NYC) for the entire town (around 40,000 people). And Dutch healthcare is extremely good and even extremely cheap compared to US healthcare.

I pay 100 Euros a month (130 USD) for full coverage and the government pays 90 Euros for me, so I pay only 10 Euros a month lol.
I do have to pay for my own medicines (up to 600 Euros a year, everything over 600 is covered) though. But I rarely make use of medicines (I hope it stays like that ).

Must be a NYC store then. Because NYC is full of them. No exaggeration. There's one in EVERY block.

I know Walgreens bought out Duane Reade, so they're both the same store now.

Duane Reade Inc., a subsidiary of the Walgreen Company, is a chain of pharmacy and convenience stores, primarily located in New York City, known for its high volume small store layouts in densely populated Manhattan locations. The headquarters is located along Ninth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.

Wikipedia

They have 250+ stores in NYC lol

Oh, so they're mainly a NY store then... I didn't know that. That explains a lot.

I just don't understand why CVS or Rite Aid don't have a lot of stores in NYC. Like I said, they have much better prices and selections. There is a good number of them here, but nowhere near as many as Duane Reade.
