Default Pierce Brosnan backs first black James Bond

Former 007 Pierce Brosnan says black British actor Colin Salmon would make an "outstanding" James Bond,
but there is no rush to replace Daniel Craig.

By James Lachno and PA
April 13, 2013

Pierce Brosnan has suggested that Colin Salmon would be his pick to become the first black James Bond.

The Irish actor, 59, who is about to appear in a Danish romantic comedy called Love Is All You Need, was asked who might replace current 007 Daniel Craig in the film franchise.

He said: "I've always thrown Colin Salmon's name in the mix. He's somebody I have worked with closely over the years. He would be outstanding and I think it would be absolutely essential."

Brosnan played James Bond in four films in the 1990s and 2000s, before Daniel Craig took over as the international man of mystery for Casino Royale in 2006.

Salmon, 50, appeared alongside Brosnan in three James Bond films – Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day – as MI6 Deputy Chief of Staff Charles Robinson. His other film roles include Resident Evil and Alien vs. Predator.

Bond, who was created by British author Ian Fleming, has never been played by a black actor. Past Bonds has included Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton. Skyfall, the most recent Bond film, starring Craig, was released to critical acclaim last year.

Brosnan, who admitted that Craig had been "doing superbly well" as 007, said playing Bond had been "one of the most rewarding roles" he had taken on in film.

"That was without a question one of the most rewarding roles. That character, and the opportunities it gave one. That job is the gift that keeps giving because once you're a Bond, you're a Bond for life.

"It's a small company of men now who have played the role and for me, it's allowed me to create my own company to produce, and to step forth into the international market and have a profile. That's a healthy thing for any actor – the more choices you have. Without a question, it was a significant part of my life and career, and is ongoing in many respects."

The Bond film franchise celebrated its 50th year last November.

I'd vote for Idris Elba as the first black Bond. I could see him continue the toughness Daniel Craig brought to the role.

I'd be for this as well. Wouldn't look forward to the backlash if it were to take place though.

I know this may be a controversial opinion, but does there need to be a black James Bond? He's not black in the novels, which is what the movies are based on, so it'd be strange to just suddenly put a black actor into the role with no reasoning beyond political correctness.

I don't want anyone thinking I'm racist or I'm against racial equilty or something, but it's the same as making the character of John Shaft white -- it wouldn't make any sense to do.

I see your point but I think Shaft is a bad example - after all, so much of the character of Shaft and the series comes from his ethnicity and culture. Bond is white in the books but his character isn't tied to his ethnicity in the same way that Shaft is.

If they ever did have a black Bond the backlash could be huge. Surely we all remember what happened when they cast a blonde as Bond?

It's the only one that came to mind . I wouldn't be against a black Bond at all -- in fact, Elba would be amazing in the role -- but it'd just seem out-of-place given the source material. I agree that the Bond character isn't tied down to his ethnicity, though, so it could work.

And yes, I do remember what happened with the blonde Bond -- people nationwide were writing him off before he'd even filmed anything, and I remember that a newspaper here in the UK would do a weekly update on the filming of Casino Royale and state how bad Craig was at the role. Haters gonna hate, I guess...even through institutionalised hating

Roger Moore's pick was Cuba Gooding Jr.

I agree with you. I couldn't imagine a white Blade. It's not a racist opinion at all.

Don't forget the good people at danielcraigisnotbond.com. His success in the role hasn't diminished their dismissal of him, with stories like this one still popping up. Mind you, they don't seem to have had much to say about Skyfall after it was released to incredible reviews, Oscar nominations (and a win) and over $1 billion at the box office...

Wow, I've never seen that website before and it was certainly an education. I don't understand why they believe that Craig is so different to all the actors who have come before him (it probably says on there somewhere, I didn't read around too much because it was all a bit weird).

The funny thing with that story was the tenuous links between what came in the trailer and their interpretations of it...especially the "he's too depressed and clinically insane to shave himself with his own razor!" which is almost the exact opposite of what's happening in that scene.

I guess it takes all sorts to make up the world.

It does indeed

As you say, haters gonna hate. And if you've gone to the trouble of setting up a website to display your hate then you really do have to carry on with the hate, regardless of anything else.

It's nice to have a hobby, I guess...

I don't mind a black bond but it has to be someone younger
at 50, he wouldn't have that many movies left in him
how about the old spice guy lol
