Default projector vs flat panel

Im thinking about getting a projector. Do projectors show as good of a picture as a 1080p tv, or do you lose that picture quality. Does it depend on the projector, the size of your screen, etc. Can anybody help me out. Ive been checking out jvc projectors, lots of good reviews on those.

Having both i love .... both . I have family friends or neighbours that just come over to and they all say the same , that they have a cinema feel that you don't have with a TV .

If you have the chance and visit some dedicated rooms at your local A/V shops and see if it is for you . For me i can't live without my 100" screen

A good 1080P projector can produce an image just as good as a TV ~ So Yes to your question.

Have a look at the last 10 or so pages of this thread. All the pictures are screen shots people have taken from their projectors.

I like projectors better.

A good one has a far less defined pixel structure so it looks more film like. Obviously bigger and what is often not talked about white uniformity. I have not seen a panel yet that produces a clean white test pattern. This bugs me big time. A good projector will do it perfectly.

Been discussed many times before....

I'm in the minority, but I prefer flat screens to projectors.

That said, I have no desire to recreate a theatre in my basement - if I want the theatre experience I'll actually go to a theatre.

Hhhhhmmm, Drive for half an hour. Wait for movie to start, sit in a bad position, smell horrible popcorn, have people talking, can't pause for a break, then watch the movie with an inferior picture and sound. I don't think so. No more Theatre for me.

I know a projector is not for everyone & there is nothing wrong with that at all.

But I am going to fall in right behind you Dono It has been a very very long time since I have seen a movie in a movie theater & probably never will again. Not when I can wait a few months & see it in a far better environment then any movie theater on this earth can provide

The correct answer is... Both.

If you plan to watch a lot of televison, hours and hours a day, and especially in a brightly-lit room, then a projector is not really the answer - you'd be replacing the bulb fairly often, and even the brightest home theater projectors do wash out and loose a lot of contrast on a screen in a brightly lit room. A projector is meant more for a darker, light-controlled room, and is better suited for movies (especially 3D movies!) and special events like sports or concert broadcasts - more for occasional use so you don't wear out the expensive bulb too quickly... a projector can be used for daily televison viewing, but it's not ideal. If you are going to watch Televison on a projector 8-10 hours a day, be prepared to buy a $300 replacement bulb every year or two at least.

If you have a room or space available to use as a dedicated home theater area, the projector is the way to go. If you are going to use a projector in the living room, then the best setup is a flat screen tv for daytime or lengthy television viewing, and then have a screen you can lower in front of the televison for your evening movie and sports projection.

I have both as well and love having the option. I have a flat panel mounted on the wall with a ceiling mounted electric screen that comes down in front of it.

/\ that's me. I use my projector for everything. I will never go back to a flat panel TV.

Well! I have to say after owning 3 lcd and 2 led tv since 2007 from 46" to 65" , l wanted to go bigger and a projector came to my mind.. I was afraid about the picture quality but I started to follow the (post your projector screenshot) thread for months, and let me tell you I saw breathtaking screenshots and that made me pull the trigger on my first projector a few days ago.
I couldn't be happier I'm glad I did.. it's just like a tv but 10 times bigger and there isn't a back light behind the screen so is more comfortable to watch movies and play video games at times.. I'm very happy with my combo setup.

I've been into digital projectors since Sharps first 720P DLP in 1999.

The only thing that will make me move from a projector now is if they produce a 4K, 110" panel with no backlight and perfect colour uniformity (especially white).
I can see that being a long time off.

I love both. But if I had to pick one over the other....hands down I will choose the projector. Love the cinema feel and look of a projectors image. Like Badas and CrazyBLUE stated, I have very little need to go to a theater again. I can wait for the blu release.

I love my PJ, gives me lots of detail and a beautiful picture. TV is also detailed, but shinier. If you want the theater experience, a PJ is the only way to go. Also, haven't been to a movie theater on ages. Last trip was to see Quantum of Solace in 2008.

Yes, I only go to the commercial theater to see a big-ticket movie, mainly in IMAX or IMAX 3D - and only because there is a newly-built IMAX theater just 5 miles from my house. I really have no desire to see a movie in either 2D or 3D on a standard sized commercial screen anymore... My home setup definitely beats the experience of all except IMAX!

Although, I just upgraded one of my amps in my system over the weekend, and added another 1000 watts to the total power output of my sound system. I now have 6000 watts of external amps, so I'm now half-way there to having an IMAX sound system, lol...

Btw, my systems at home are in separate rooms - I have a 52 Aquos in my living room upstairs, and a complete, dedicated movie theater covering my entire basement area downstairs. And absolutely no OTA televison, cable or satellite reception at my house anymore!

i have never regretted purchasing my EPSON 8350. a year later its a well worth investment. my bulb lasted a little over a yr and EPSON replaced it free of charge. even tho the warranty was only for 90 days (for the bulb)

+1 Unless it's a movie I can't wait to see, I won't go out of my way to see a movie at a theater. Having a projector and surround sound at home makes for a much better experience. Besides, even after buying the blu-ray and then the snacks and drinks to go with it, it's still cheaper than going out. And best of all, no annoying people! I'll never not own a projector.

Video games on a giant screen is incredibly fun and immersive.

Projectors are awesome! I miss my 12 foot wide 2.35:1 scope screen set up.

I'm not using a flat panel though, but a rear projection Samsung DLP TV (HL-T5676S), which I guess will suffice until I find a place for a projector.

I think people really have exaggerated any sort of degradation you get from a projector. In fact, I find a lot of blu-rays really spread their wings when you play them on a giant projection screen. Entry level projectors don't have a contrast of similarly priced flat panels, and many projector are bulb based, but when you get to the higher end like JVC, and if you don't run your projector 8 hours a day, it's really a moot point.

If you have the room for one, definitely go for it!

A flat panel is worth getting though for general use such as general TV, checking your email or downloading movies/games. Preserve your bulb for big screen movies and gaming.
