Default Dario Argentos 3 Mothers Trilogy?

Hi Everyone,
Does anyone know which are the preferred versions of these films? there are so many releases now for Suspiria, Inferno, but not so much for Mother of Tears, and is MoT uncut somewhere? I see the single Japan release is OOP now but you can get it in a Box Set for $100+, but surely do not want to spend that much if it is censored, so any and all info you guys can provide would be great.

Thanks

The US edition of Inferno is pretty good...the Japanese release for Suspiria seems to be the best version available..and I didn't even know Tears was available anywhere.

Suspiria - all Blu-ray releases are bad imo. Since they all got the wrong color timing and the soundtrack isn't the same as it was in 1977.

Inferno - The German release is about as good as it gets. But also very expensive. Great sound and picture quality.

Mother of Tears - Only available in France. But the french subtiles are forced when you select english audio.

OK, for Suspiria what DVD release has the correct color timing if any?

Inferno, are you talking about the Koch Media book release?

as for Mother of Tears do you know if the France release is uncut?

Thanks for the responses so far.

Suspiria - The Italian DVD comes pretty close to the orginal color timing, but has many drop outs and heavy compression in in some scenes. The soundtrack is also closer to the original, but it cuts out the music during the end credits, which sucks!

Inferno - Yes, the Koch Mediabook. I own that one myself.

Mother of Tears is uncut, yes.

Fantastic, thanks for the info, I have the Koch Inferno coming soon, and I already have the French BD, but would you happen to have a link to the Suspiria DVD you mentioned? I am thinking about re coloring the best version available on BD, so besides the color which Suspiria is the best looking?

Thanks again

The Italian DVD is long OOP I believe. The best looking DVD is the Anchor Bay/Blue Underground though. The colors look fantastic. It is not what Argento intended in 1977, but it looks amazing nonetheless. This is actually my favorite release of Suspiria.

Do you have a link to that Italian DVD anyways, would like to see what it is and maybe ask around, also possibly a link to the AB/BU DVD?

Thanks again for your help

Not a link to the DVDs, but here's a comparison between the two:

Thanks again, so in my reading it seems the choice for Suspiria is between the Japanese and France version, but the Italian DVD has the correct color timing? I have read that a lot like the audio on the UK version though, trying to hunt down the LD ripped PCM as well.

Is there any info at all on the quality of the Australian Umbrella releases of Suspiria and Inferno?

Land of Whimsy catalogs and compares numerous Argento BDs/DVDs. I'd look around there. This gives you a number of posts tagged "Dario Argento" (though strangely not all; guess he missed some of the tagging, because I know there are direct comparisons for the Inferno BDs, so you'll have to look around).

I don't know that it's accurate to say that the Anchor Bay DVD isn't faithful to the director's intent, because the first post there says that a '70s print was very similar to the DVD in terms of color timing. But I suppose it's an ongoing debate.

Just judging by screencaps, I prefer Blue Underground's BD for Inferno simply because they boosted the colors like on their/Anchor Bay's DVD release. Faithful to the original film, I can't say, but if Suspiria is to be as vibrant as claimed, I don't see why the second in the series ought not be likewise.

Color timing doesn't seem to be the most damning thing about the various Suspiria BDs; it sounds like the contrast is overblown and destroys the lighting in several scenes.

I have the Japanese import of Suspiria...it's true about the contrast...it is way overblown and in some scenes ruins the look of the film. But it you're dying to see the film in HD it is serviceable in some ways, though definitely makes for a compromised viewing experience...

I don't know if there is an Italian dub for Mother of Tears; it was all filmed in English, I'm pretty sure.

Thanks, but how does the Australian Inferno look compared to the others?

So are there no color issues with Inferno is it just Suspiria?

No color issues with Inferno...not sure if it looks exactly like it did theatrically but the blue underground disc is definitely a quality releases...one of their best. Arrow's version is pretty good too but I believe contrast is boosted a bit...

Thanks, I have the Blue Underground release, although I have heard that the German Koch release is even better then the BU release, I will see when my copy gets here, now to sort out Suspiria.

I wasn't aware of the German release...let me know how it is! I know it sucks waiting..but to be honest that is probably your best bet for Suspiria...it will come out in the states at some point, and hopefully with the correct color timing. Until then, the blue underground dvd may lack to the fine detail of the BD releases available, but at least is LOOKS like Suspiria...and that's what really matters.
