Default PS2 Upscaling

Anyone know if / when the PS3 will be getting a firmware upgrade to upscale Playstation 2 games to 720p anytime soon? I've been waiting for this before I play games like God of War 2 and such. I'd much rather play the PS2 games I haven't played yet at 720p than 480p. 480 looks absolutely terrible on my t.v.. It's not just the picture quality, but it's a samsung so 480p doesn't fill the entire screen, and is off center (black bar on the left is much bigger than the black bar on the right).

I've heard it will get it....... eventually haha but only for a limited amount of games. I've played FFXII on ps3, and that looked absolutely abysmal. Character hair was jagged and stuff. I was pretty pissed that a $600 machine looked crappier than an original ps2 =.=. Guess all we can do is wait........ =/

Limited amount of games? Well, the ones I want to play are pretty big name, so I'll assume most of them will be on that list, plus I'm sure they'll add more games as time goes on.

I believe you are right. I have noticed a nice improvement on the PS2 games played on my PS3. Maybe they are expecting no jagged edges at all. That may happen when full upscaling in implemented, but not right now.

Upscaling is not going to work to eliminate jaggies. Consider that PS2 games at 480p are already "sharp". Upscaling it would make it worse.

What's needed is for the PS3 to RENDER everything in the PS2 games at 720p so that jaggies can be eliminated. But then you'll ***** about the textures not looking HD - and that can't be fixed because the textures are PS2 textures.

I completed God of War II on my PS2 before trading it in for the PS3. It played in 480p on my plasma and looked amazing. As good as the games I have seen so far on the PS3 in 720p or 1080i. Don't sweat it. It is a great game. Play it.

That probably means your TV has a pretty good upscaler built in or you are feeding it through another device.

As for sccpu3d post, if you think your PS2 games look better on your PS2, try plugging that PS2 into a HDTV. Then, compare the difference between the PS2 and PS3 on PS2 games.

even with xbox 360's upscaling of xbox titles and anti-aliasing it still has jaggies.

I have only been playing FFXII on a PS3 on a 37" Sharp LCD.
Since I don't have anything other than this to compare it to (Don't have PS2 and never had one, Standard Def TV, Lack of HDMI) I wouldn't know how to complain.

When sitting back at a reasonable distance from the TV it looks fantastic. I haven't had any problems whatsoever & I love the wireless controllers. I do have a Sony Upscaling DVD player & I don't notice much if any difference when playing DVD's in 1080i than when I play them on the PS3.

I am glad my PS3 has the PS2 processor in it though.

I imagine it will be in the 2.0 update that will probably happen real soon.

Would be nice to have an official announcement about it from Sony. I was hoping that upscaling for PS2 games and DVDs would happen with the "Big March Update".

I don't really understand the point behind keeping what future updates will do a secret... Hell, you even have to go online to see what they did after you've downloaded them. A feature telling you right then and there on your PS3 what the update just did would be nice.

People suck. They ruin it for everybody.

That still doesn't explain why they won't let us know what the updates do right before we download them / right after we download them.

There is a website that let's you know when an update has been released and what's included. There is also a "sticky" thread that let's you when they are available. If you are constantly hooked up to the internet, the PS3 let's you know there is a new firmware available. On top of that, once the firmware has been downloaded, the online help guide let's you know about the new features and how to use them.

Asking for more than that just isn't fair at this point.
