United Kingdom Broken (Rufus Norris)

Broken Blu-ray REVIEW

NEWS/TRAILER
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=11059

Quote:
StudioCanal have announced that they will release on Blu-ray director Rufus Norris' award winning drama Broken (2012), starring Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy, Rory Kinnear, and Lily James. The release will be available for purchase online and in shops across the United Kingdom on July 1.

In 2012, Broken won Best British Independent Film and Best Supporting Actor (Rory Kinnear) awards at the British Independent Film Awards.

An eleven-year-old girl finds herself exposed to the inequities of life in this rite-of-passage drama directed by Rufus Norris. With her mother having left the family home, Skunk (Eloise Lawrence) now lives in suburbia with her kind-hearted father Archie (Tim Roth), her brother Jed (Bill Milner) and Polish au pair Kasia (Zana Marjanovic). In spite of being a diabetic, Skunk refuses to be hamstrung by the disease and always approaches life with a smile on her face. But that all changes when she witnesses a violent attack on her neighbours' simple-minded son Rick (Robert Emms) by fellow neighbour Mr. Oswald (Rory Kinnear), who believes, wrongly, that he has raped one of his daughters.

Fair play to Rory Kinnear on winning best actress.

He beats a lot of people up in this film. It's decent enough.

Fantastic film, well worth catching if you get a chance. I went into this one without knowing much about it having only seen the trailer (which doesn't give much away) and found it to be one of the most gripping, devestating, emotionally-draining and wonderful films I've seen so far this year. By no means a 'big' film (it's very much a domestic British drama) it's nontheless acted superbly with Roth, Kinnear and Eloise Lawrence all being stand-outs. I look forward to seeing this again at home.

Broken Blu-ray REVIEW

I could not agree any more with Buddy Ackerman above. One of the best directorial debuts and certainly one of the best British films I've seen in years.

Absolutely superb cast!

Great review, Pro-B, and I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. Can't wait to see it again.

Not a criticism of you especially, pro-B, but I notice that - despite acknowledging it's "brilliantly scripted"- you don't even namecheck the writer in your review, instead portraying it as Norris's triumph.

This is unfortunately very common. Writers often get blamed when a film is bad but are rarely acknowledged when a film is good, the director getting most of the credit. In fact, when films are good the screenplay is largely what makes them so; and when a film is bad, it's usually because the director/producers have messed with the screenplay.

Duggie, this is a well deserved criticism.

I should probably point out, however, that I am in fact not familiar with Daniel Clay's novel, which is why I also did not name Mark O'Rowe as I don't know how well it handles the material. The final result, however, is clearly very impressive as I think that this is one of only a couple of recent films where there is no clear division between main and secondary characters, and this allows for a very personal viewing experience. So, yes, I do believe that the film is brilliantly scripted. But your criticism is justified.

On a side note, when appropriate I always try to credit cinematographers, composers, and even editors and tech unit folks in our reviews.

Thank you for you comments, Duggie, and have a wonderful weekend

Thanks for taking the point graciously and in the spirit it was intended. I enjoy your reviews very much and am often swayed by them.

I really do feel that if screenwriters were accorded more respect across the board we might end up with better movies.

Watched this yesterday and loved it. Won't be everyone's cup of tea, but thought it was a real class act. More British movies like this please instead of crappy gangster garbage.
