Did you have your hearing at any time and lose it? or never had it? it is interesting that you selected that title, as the main reason I have for wanting to see it, is for the beatles musical score.

No i was born that way, so were my parents and my other family members. my son is 6th generation deaf family in US. Therefore, ASL is my first language and English is my 2nd language.

I am not deaf, but I did have a bad head trauma accident a little over a year ago and as a consequence have lost about 60% of my hearing. So I'm certainly a lot more fortunate in that I have some options to help me out with hearing the movies better.

That said, I still like to use the sub-titles as it is the dialog that is the toughest to catch. Especially if it's a movie I haven't seen before. If I've seen it before, my memory can usually help me follow the drift.

But the biggest no-subtitle complaint I have is with the Stargate SG-1 seasons on DVD.

Deaf parents have deaf children? I didn't know that... I thought that being deaf was something that you couldn't pass on to your children. I thought it was usually caused by some random mutation in the gene that didn't give the signal to develop something for hearing.

Have you seen "Jenseits der Stille" (Beyond Silence)? It's a German film (also released in US) about a girl who has deaf parents and the difficulties she has with them in her love for music. I highly recommend it cos it shows the discrimination between the hearing world and the deaf world. I didn't really know that HOH people have also developed their own culture in a way.

I have a moderate to moderately severe hearing loss. it has gotten worse over time. My family has a number of people who are hard of hearing. I also use subtitles all the time to catch the dialog.

I agree with the earlier poster who said that Stargate's seasons 1-7 or so are disappointments due to no subtitles. Granted, I've seen them enough times now that I have finally caught everything.

Does that mean that seasons 8-10 DO have subtitles? I own all of them, but haven't gotten that far yet. That'd be great!

Just a question from the curious:

Do those of you who are severely hearing impaired or deaf still turn the LFE channel up so you can feel the movie? If you're not, you really ought to invest in the best subwoofer you can afford.

my pops was deaf and mom is hard of hearing...

pops: had spinal meningitis as a toddler...
mom: her sister (one of 2 that were naturally deaf) said she had something in her ear and popped her eardrum with a coat-hanger...

also, I hate ASL  I just can't understand it being that I speak English so fluently...

did you go to PSD by any chance?...(I may have spelled it wrong as I haven't visited that place since I was about 11)

and as much as I hate to admit, my ability to sign is rather lackluster...but I can do the alphabet in less than 26 seconds
