Germany The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981)

I figured I would start a thread for this since no one else had yet...

current front and back images...

The-Legend-of-the-Lone-Ranger-Blu-ray

I am hoping this release will be decent since I don't think it will be released anywhere else in the world on blu-ray and this will be it, EVER!

discuss...

Update:
I found these images on the Koch media website, I hope this isn't what the video looks like...

Update 2:
These images are not representative of the video quality at all! Thank goodness!

I might be interested in getting this. I've got the DVD (somewhere). I wonder if it is region locked?

I'm pretty sure this will be be region B locked knowing Koch media, so only for multi region bluray players in the USA.

Ironic since the Lone Ranger is such an American icon but this blu can't be seen by the masses in the US.

Well, I have this on order but I won't receive it until around July 18th. Has anyone watched this yet and can tell us about the video quality, etc.?

Also, please post any links to reviews online if there are any. Thanks

Hoping for the best....but considering the only prior DVD was 4:3 non anamorphic widescreen I would take anything as long as it isnt cropped.

Just watched this, and image quality was average at best. Very soft, and looked to be the same transfer that was used for the letterboxed UK DVD. The full 2.35 aspect ratio is preserved, with English audio in DTS-HD Master 2.0.

For better or worse nothing has been done to manipulate the image, and you'll find neither DNR or contrast boosting here. Black levels are weak, often shifting to blueish in deep shadows. Grain structure was muddy, and I spotted some video noise in the blue skies in the opening act. It doesn't help that the film's original photography is hazy and much of it appears to have been shot in natural light, which brings out the inadequacies of the transfer all too well. The look of the film works against it in a careless video transfer like it's had here. For die-hard fans only (like myself). Casual buyers are adviced to stay away.

Beneath it all, it's a beautifully shot film, with a great score by John Barry giving it an almost dreamlike atmosphere. Too bad the film didn't get a new transfer.

I will agree with Nissen's more technical opinion of the bluray, but I have to add my more layman opinion. I was very happy with the blu because it is the best TLOTLR has ever (and IMO will ever) looked.

I was able to relive the cheap theater experience I had back in 1981 when I watched TLOTLR as a kid because the transfer on blu is not that more modern, three dimensional, looking through a glass window picture quality. The best comparision picture quality wise I can make is that the transfer is similar to Koch's/Universal's transfer of The Shadow on bluray.

So, it's not the best bluray transfer you've ever seen, but if you're a fan at all for TLOTLR and can play region locked B discs, this bluray is highly recommended.

Yep. While the disc certainly has its drawbacks, it still is the best available version of this near-forgotten film on home video.

I will keep my old, UK DVD for nostalgia, but the German Blu is all I'll be watching from now on.
