United Kingdom ABCs Of Death July 22nd 2013

From the directors of -
HOUSE OF THE DEVIL
HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN
A SERBIAN FILM
TOKYO GORE POLICE
YOU'RE NEXT & Many More

SYNOPSIS: The ABC s OF DEATH is perhaps the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning fifteen countries and featuring segments directed by over two dozen of the world's leading talents in contemporary genre film.

Inspired by children s educational books, the motion picture is comprised of twenty - six individual chapters, each helmed by a different director assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were then given free reign in choosing a word to create a story involving death.

Provocative, shocking, funny and ultimately confrontational, THE ABC s OF DEATH is the definitive vision of modern horror diversity. Monster Pictures are proud to present this alphabetical arsenal of destruction orchestrated by what Fangoria calls " a stunning roll call of some of the most exciting names in horror across the world. "

Twenty-six directors. Twenty-six ways to die.

Anyone interested in this ? I think it sounds interesting! I managed to pre-order from Amazon for £10.25 but it seems to have gone up now... however its currently only £9.99 on Sainsburys.

After hearing about some of the shorts...nope, not going to bother.

(F is for Fart...seriously)

Annoyed this got pushed back, was originally meant to be out in a week or twos time.
I shall certainly be picking it up, plenty of directors on there who I love.

F is actually one of the better ones. At the screenign I went to everyone loved it. I can understand why someone would dismiss it based on the description or even, as it seems, just the word, but it's supposed to be an zany live-action Japanese weirdo film. And, in that respects, it's very good, it apes the genre perfectly.

Besides. it's not worth getting hung up on what the letters stand for. Half of them are used as punchlines to the shorts, taking them on their face value is pointless.

Having said that, I don't know if I'd recommend it as a blind buy. It's worth watching once if you're in the right mood with the right company but, as with any anthology film, the quality varies from short to short. Some are scary, some are silly, some are darkly funny, some are violent, some are blunt, some are a bit dull, some are clever, some try to be clever, some are dumb, some just just don't work - but there are more hits than misses.

Oddly, Ben Wheatley's short was one of the weaker ones, something I didn't expect.

Fair enough, I saw the claymation one about a year ago, and I enjoyed that, but as a Youtube short, I don't think I'd enjoy a whole movie like it though.

Also, I think it's Ti West's contribution to this that really disgusted me (
[Show spoiler]I think it's M for Miscarriage or something like that
). It just seems rather distasteful.

That one is divisive. It depends if you take it as (extreme) dark humour or not. Maybe it was just weirdly placed in amongst it all but I felt it was one of the examples where the definition was the punchline (it only comes up at the end of each short) and that was just a super-dark, very blunt punchline. On its own I can see it coming across as disgusting and distasteful but, when placed in context with the others, it works much better. But yes, half the audience were shocked into laughter (which I believe is the point), the other half were just shocked. At least one person I knew walked out after that one.

It's worth it for this letters:

D for Dogfight
F for Fart
H for Hydro-Electric Diffusion
J for Jidai-Geki
L for Libido (This one is the most grotesque one but it's also well made)
N for Nuptials
O for Orgasm (This one is absolutely gorgeous, which isn't shocking since it's from the directors of Amer)
P for Pressure (This one is as jolly as a basket of skinned hamsters which contrasts a lot with many of the shorts)
R for Removed (This one is an organic horror thingy about a guy whose skin is actually film reels)
S for Speed
T for Toilet
V for Vagitus
X for XXL
Y for Youngbuck

So in total it's a half good experience and the ones I didn't list were insanely poor or just "meh". Z for Zetsumetsu also deserves to be mentioned since it's ****ing insane (Giant penises with katanas, women shooting veggies from their vaginas, japanese nazis and Dr. Strangelove references... I'm not making this up) but others like G for Gravity and M for Miscarriage (It's funny how Ti West has consistently delivered the worst segments in 2 anthologies, this one and the one he made on V/H/S).

Not sure it's even worth that. But there are some memorable shorts there.
