Post How big are large cinemas front speakers?

Last week i saw hangover 3 at the largest cinema in Malta which seats over 700 people and is the only cinema in Malta to be equipped with full T.H.X approved sound.

I saw all the side and rear speakers , but for the fronts and sub, they must be behind the screen or something.

I was wondering , how big are the fronts for a cinema like this ? And what sub ?

I just worked on a theater last week and took a peak behind the screen...
4 15" subs in two ported enclosures. Center channel highs consisted of two massive horn drivers. ( about 15" wide each) and an enclosure that could have housed a single 15 but probably had smaller drivers..couldnt get an angle to see.

This was an upscale, yet small theater.

Something like 80% of theaters use JBL cinema speakers. You can take a look at jblpro.com. They're actually affordable at 500-600 dollars (plus free shipping) a piece for the 3000 series. The surrounds go for 500 a pair. They're all powered by Crown amps. Crown and JBL are divisions of Harman.

Yes, the front channels, and subwoofers are located behind the screen.

What do those cost? Are they available to consumers?

I usually go to the Regal Cinemas closest to me (Mason, OH). I would love to get an in-depth tour there to see what it consists of behind the screen. They would probably think I was a nut job if I asked. Anyone in any theater business allowed to post pics? If so, I would be interested in seeing them.

Yes, $500 for JBL 3678, $600 for the JBL 3677, $500 for a pair of 8340a JBL surrounds. JBL 3677 is used in USC's filmschool screening room. It's meant for small to regular sized commercial theaters. The bigger ones go for $1000-$2000. They're on amazon, but the prices are higher than authorized dealers.

Excellent info. Thanks for sharing. It appears Andrew says this is overkill for 99% of us lol.

Definitely worth considering for the 1% of us with very large, dedicated rooms then
