The French edition is being released soon and apparently, we're gonna have a Blu-Ray 2D with it, so it's probably going to be the remastered edition. If people are interested

Was the original Blu that bad? I never bought it, but I remember thinking the screen captures looked pretty good.

I'll take a bit of DNR and accurate colours/excellent PQ over the absolute MESS that is the 3D version.

WORST looking blu-ray in my collection by far!

I have to ask how many Blu-rays you actually have in your collection. I've got over 3000 and wouldn't even put this in the bottom half. In fact it's one of my favourite 3d Blu-rays and a really good post-conversion in my view. Seem to remember pretty much all the USA review sites gave it a thumbs up too.

Completely agree. Apart from the "having 3000 blu-rays" bit of course.

To be fair if something has shit PQ I usually trade it in so no I don't have any substandard looking BR's in my collection. I have only kept this because it's an import and I didn't already own the 2D version which looks fine.

While there is no doubt the 3D conversion itself is top notch and adds much to a lot of the flight scenes, the non removal of grain before the conversion was done has left the image with a totally un-natural looking grain structure which is made worse by the horrible changes to the colour timing.

I don't have a 3Dtv I only have a projector and a Sony HMZ both of which display the many anomalies ten fold. I would say half of it looks fine, but the scenes on the ground in particular look terrible and I wouldn't even attempt to bother to watch the new transfer in 2D.

I watched my import the other day... I thought it was a mixed bag. The grain feels really pronounced in the 3.D version (I don't usually mind grain, but it sticks out right from the very first shot and is there for the duration) and I noticed some bad crosstalk on some of those moving jets, but there is a pretty good sense of depth throughout. I think it would have looked really cool in IMAX 3D, but it seems we are out of luck at this point ; it must have done poorly in the States.

As for the 2.D version... I had a quick look at a few scenes and yeah, the D.N.R is quite obvious, especially in the darker interior scenes (James Tolkin briefing Cruise and Edwards about Top Gun, the famous club scene). As for the colours... You know, I didn't notice while I was watching the 3.D version, but in retrospect, they probably were different from the 2.D version. I'll have to check again.

From what I have read about the conversion, the problem appears to be that because they didn't remove the grain you are seeing 2 layers of grain (one from each eye) instead of just the one. In the low light scenes (like the bar or the control room) in particular the image is terrible. It's like you are watching it through a layer of mud.

The colour changes are mad as all hell mostly, but we will never know how much Tony was involved and what they based the colour on.
I would take it over the old DNR master there is no fine detail and the grain is just gone, the grain is part of a TS film.
