title says it all, is it just me? or is it a known thing?
that's why I still haven't competed Bioshock: Infinite, I played for an hour on release date, got sick and couldn't continue.. Borderline 2, too But I did complete Dead Island and the first Bioshock so I guess it doesn't happen all the time, and I think I was in denial until today I downloaded Portal 2 and played for 30 minutes, around 5 hours ago and my head still hurts (spinning) |

It's generally a field of view issue. The field of view tends to be very narrow in console games as an easy way to increase the frame rate. Which can have an adverse effect on the person playing the game. If you don't have a gaming PC, the only thing you can hope for are more games having a higher field of view in the next console generation.

I can only play FPS games for an hour or 2 at most before I get a little uneasy. I don't mind first person games where you still see a little bit of the person you're controlling, but games like Mirror's Edge gives me instant motion sickness

I will say though it's not much of a performance issue, but rather the setting you play your games. Since console games are made with the assumption that you are sitting distant from the screen, like in a living room, the field of view is set more narrow to become easier to view from a distance. If you sit close to the screen, or in a different setting like a desk on your computer or front projection home theater, where you sit closer to the screen, you will need a wider field of view for the game to be more patible. I think it wouldn't be hard to add an option to adjust the field of view on consoles. Resident Evil 6 on consoles did this with a patch that allowed you to adjust the FOV (found in the camera settings of the game). I hope more games next gen will have these options. |

I ask because I get an upset stomach and a touch of vertigo while playing FPV and 3PV games in the dark. But, if I turn the lights on, I can go for hours on end with either genre. ![]() |

I just recently switched back to DLP after using nothing but LCD for about seven years. I had a severe reaction to it for the first week or two, before my brain started adjusting to processing the way DLP renders a picture again. I then moved up from 1x screen width to about .5 or .6x and it improved even further - still not as comfortable as watching SXRD, but I can easily go for 3-4 hours without any problems now, despite playing Doom for hours at a time. Despite the common falacy that moving your eyes around causes eye strain, it's just the opposite. Focused vision in the same area for extended periods causes eye strain. Sitting close enough that the light from the screen fills your field of vision in a dark theater-like environment, or that you have to move your eyes and refocus, rather than constantly staring at small object, ten feet away will cause eye strain much faster than moving your eyes around. This is why they tell people not to watch "tvs" in a dark room, as most displays are too small or most people sit too far away for the light from the screen to fill their field of vision. It's also why they tell people working on a computer, even in a well lighted environment to look away from the monitor at least once every 20 minutes.
