Is the PS3 region free

Is the PS3 region free? I don't care about games just movies. Just wondering for standard def. dvds not blu-ray. If not can it be made to run region free?

It has DVD regions and there is currently no way to bypass that.

Well... that's true for US version of PS3...

I have three PS3s.(40GB, 40GB, 80GB) One of the was ordered from
a Hong Kong Ebay seller before Christmas last year. It plays all DVD
regions. I'm not sure how they did it... when I received the PS3, it
was clearly hardware-hacked.(which the Ebay seller told me before I
bought it) However, it can only play US/Japan/HK Blu-ray movies. Some
region-locked Blu-rays that I ordered from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.de
won't play.

US/Japan/HK are all the same region on blu-ray i think
