Default Courage Under Fire

Courage Under Fire Blu-ray

Although this movie is far from perfect, for anyone who has lost a family member in a war, any war, this is powerful stuff. For anyone who's lost someone due to what is insultingly referred to as "friendly" fire, it can be a heart-rending, devastating reminder of the ordeal which they endured.

The one performance which holds the emotional center and focus of the film is, of course, that of Denzel Washington. While not considered to be among his greatest works, his character's personal, hellish journey is a moving tribute to all soldiers - and one small piece of the price they and their families pay.

Great film with great performances from Denzel and Lou Diamond Philips and an early performance from Matt Damon!

He subjected himself to extreme dieting and became very sick.

In order to lose 40 pounds (18 kilograms) for the later scenes, Matt Damon went on a strict regimen of food deprivation and physical training. On Inside the Actors Studio, Damon said that the regimen consisted of six and a half miles of running in the morning and again at night, a diet of chicken breast, egg whites, and one plain baked potato per day, and a large amount of coffee and cigarettes. His health was affected to the extent that he had to have medical supervision for several months afterwards. His efforts, however, did not go unnoticed; director Francis Ford Coppola was so impressed by Damon's dedication to method acting that he offered him the leading role in The Rainmaker (1997). Steven Spielberg was also impressed by his performance, but thought he was too skinny and discounted him from casting considerations for Saving Private Ryan until he met Damon during the filming of Good Will Hunting when he was back at his normal weight.

When I saw the change, I thought : No way they did that with lighting and make-up! The guy just ... transformed! A great performance by Damon (in his first big film role?). Thanks for the link, the info and the pix, BRGF, nice post!

Well, he had a substantial role in Geronimo as well, but few people saw that movie.

Matt Damon was really memorable in this. Not just for the aforementioned weight loss, but also how he quietly embues his character with a sense of deep internal pain. It's an excellent performance and he never over plays it.

Thanks. I have original issue with UPC 024543 414278. I see now that there has been a reissue (UPC 02453 010838) that is standalone. (There is also the "Own the Moments" line triple feature.)

Don’t know if this helps or if the disc is any different, but I’ve got the one-disc …

… and it plays fine in my OPPO BDP-103.

Thanks. I think if you check the back of your copy, you'll find that it is the the reissue I reference by UPC in my last post.

I got the same disc with the same UPC but no problem playing random chapters now in my BDT220. It's been awhile since I last saw this, so I might end up watching the whole movie

There is apparently an issue with my copy that has cropped up just while sitting on the shelf despite it looking pristine to the eye. I pulled out my little Sony BDP-S1700 that I bring with on trips (so I can have my own BDs in the hotel room that are precisely what I'm wanting to watch instead of Redbox' narrow options). It doesn't play on that either.

I have played this disc in the past, albeit on prior BD players years ago (OPPO 83 and 93). Will send to OPPO.

Hopefully not being alarmist, but my case has that light layer of film/shmutz on it that was not there when new that many are complaining about in the thread about Paramount titles that they are pulling off the shelf and finding unplayable.

Sorry I realised mine is the Region B UK disc. It plays ok. Sorry probably not much help. Hope you get it sorted.
It might be the dreaded disc rot.

I'm bumping this, for Johnny "Night Train" Monfriez.

[Show spoiler]

Feel like this film doesn't get enough respect. Every time I mention this film to someone, they just look at me with a blank stare. Does anyone else absolutely love this movie?

First of all, the main cast:
  • Denzel Washington as Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Serling
  • Meg Ryan as Captain Karen Emma Walden
  • Lou Diamond Phillips as Staff Sergeant John Monfriez
  • Matt Damon as Specialist Andrew Ilario
  • Bronson Pinchot as Bruno, a White House aide
  • Seth Gilliam as Sergeant Steven Altameyer
  • Regina Taylor as Meredith Serling
  • Michael Moriarty as Brigadier General Hershberg
  • Scott Glenn as Tony Gartner, a Washington Post reporter and Vietnam veteran
  • Sean Astin as Private Patella

[Show spoiler]

Even the casting director on this thing was a legend.

Mary Colquhoun(1940-2000)

She put together a few projects you may be familiar with...

Stir of Echoes, The Siege, Snake Eyes, Legends of the Fall, My Girl, Betsy's Wedding, Glory, Sea of Love, Hairspray, Hamburger Hill, Maximum Overdrive, Raw Deal... and the list goes on.

Our Director, Mr. Zwick isn't too shabby himself, having made his film debut with the comedy About Last Night (1986), followed by Glory (1989), Legends of the Fall (1994), Courage Under Fire (1996), The Siege (1998), The Last Samurai (2003), Blood Diamond (2006), and Defiance (2008). His later films include Love & Other Drugs (2010), Pawn Sacrifice (2014), and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016). He won the Academy Award for Best Picture for Shakespeare in Love (1998) as a producer. [+]

On the lens is the muthaf*ckin OG himself Sir Roger Deakins.

And then the music. Oh nothin'. Just James Horner over in the corner doin' his thang thang. My man won two Academy Awards for his musical composition to James Cameron's Titanic (1997), which became the best-selling orchestral film soundtrack of all time. He also wrote the score for the highest-grossing film of all time, Cameron's Avatar (2009). Horner's other Oscar-nominated scores were for Aliens (1986), An American Tail (1986), Field of Dreams (1989), Apollo 13 (1995), Braveheart (1995), A Beautiful Mind (2001), and House of Sand and Fog (2003). [+]

I've probably seen this movie at least five or six times and it gets better every time I watch it. Am I the only one?

I saw it on cable and really liked it, I have two copies on Blu-Ray. Denzel really liked playing military/cops or investigators throughout his career.
