Default Mountain Monsters (Destination America)

Just watched the second airing, Perry County Grassman, and I'm still on the fence about the show. The best way to describe it is Finding Bigfoot, but with hillbillies looking for more than just Sasquatch. They call themselves Appalachian Investigators of Mysterious Sightings (AIMS). It's obviously scripted and staged, but it's entertaining and I'm a sucker for this kind of television (Monster Quest). I need a couple more episodes before I decide to commit, but I'm sure I'll stick it out.

I couldn't stop laughing at this review of the show from imdb:

Quote:
I debated giving this show a 1 out of 10 because it truly thinks the audience is mentally challenged. I also debated giving it a 10 out of 10 because it is absolutely hilarious, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. I ended up averaging the two, and gave it a 5.

The show is obviously fake. Every episode is the same. Talk to hillbilly "eyewitnesses", watch some fake footage, or show some fake photographic evidence. Then the "hunt" is on. And by "hunt" I mean find some fake footprints, almost immediately, in the dark. Then some other "evidence" like dead animals, or a scratched up tree, or the creatures lair... all within minutes. I find it funny how experienced hunters can go a season without even seeing a deer or a turkey, but somehow these idiots find a lizard demon (or whatever it is they are looking for that episode) on the first try.

After the evidence has been found, then the creature will start messing with these guys. Keep in mind it is pitch black outside except for the dollar store flashlights they wear on their heads. The creature will start growling or roaring or whatever it is they do, the guys will get panicky and yell "What the hell was that?!?!??!" Then cut to commercial.

After commercial, the guys are acting like they are under an all out assault from the monster-of-the-week, flailing guns around and panicking. About this time they will regroup and come up with a plan to catch the monster. One of the guys will build a trap (my favorite was the giant bug zapper for the mothman), and the old man will come up with a plan to trap the creature. The plan always hinges on the creature being at an exact location, and chasing it into the trap.

After the trap is built, they head back into the woods (at night again of course) and attempt to find the monster again. They always do. Then after many "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT??!??!?!" moments, the monster, which of course is never visible, heads right for the trap. It always manages to elude the trap somehow. "SUM*****!!!" They almost got it. Again. The monster just missed the pit they dug. The mothman cut off the generator to the bug zapper. The wampus cat tore through the net. The devil dogs they caught aren't the right ones, so no need to show video footage of them.

The show is laugh out loud funny. Some of the dialogue and acting are so bad you will be in stitches. I almost died at the part in the mothman episode where "Buck" faints. Then Trapper asks Buck "You seen him in the eyes again, dittin ya?" Comedy gold. There are so many parts that just crack me up. I, seriously, can't wait for season 2.

That review is spot on.

After watching several episodes from several seasons every episode follows the same basic story structure.

1. They get a call from someone who is having a problem with some creature.
2. They go and interview them, usually shown some photographic or video evidence.
3. They go and investigate and find some so called evidence.
4. They go on the first night time "hunt". They get scared of some noises or something in the woods.
5. The two guys build a trap.
6. They go on another "hunt". During which they again hear howls in the woods or stuff is thrown at them. They get the upper hand and chase the creature right to the trap.
7. By the time they get there 99% of the time the trap is smashed or the bait is simply gone. (I think the only time I saw them capture some creature were just some normal sized hogs.)
8. They get pissed about it but soon are all joking about it.

The one thing I have to wonder, it seems that all of these creatures are nocturnal.
If so, why do "hunts" at night?
Wouldn't it be more easy to do it during the day and just investigate the area for possible areas where a creature can sleep during the day and capture it when it's sleeping?

There are several other monster shows that seem to follow this same basic story structure, one being Alaska Monsters.

Oh man this show is great. Every time I catch a random episode on it seems to be about the Dark Forest. I've see episodes where they were hunting some kind of werewolf, a little spirit girl, and one where they finally confronted the "other team" they're always having trouble with.

It seems that the story line of the "other team" a year or so ago what took away from the show. They got away from monsters and took on this thing about another team. It just went downhill quickly.

And from what I can find out the last episode aired in June 2017. That's almost 2 years ago now.

Surely if it was renewed, new episodes would have aired by now. I think it's been un-officially cancelled.
