Charlie Brown in 3-D? Good grief!

In an unexpected move, it turns out the big-screen "Charlie Brown" adaptation that was announced in October is the latest to join the never-ending slate of 3-D movies on tap. Everyone's favorite yellow and black-clad comic-book character is slated for a 2015 theatrical release.

Twentieth Century Fox announced the news Thursday at CinemaCon. Very few details were revealed about the production, and the announcement came only with a 3-D image of Charlie Brown projected onto the screen at the convention, according to The Wrap. Blue Sky Studios, the Fox animation company responsible for "Horton Hears a Who!" and the "Ice Age" series, will create the movie.

Steve Martino ("Horton," "Ice Age: Continental Drift") has been recruited to direct. It took two years to obtain the rights to the beloved story, as creator Charles Schultz, who died in 2000, has kept a tight lock on his material. Schultz's son Craig and grandson Bryan co-wrote the screenplay, with assistance from short-film writer and director Cornelius Uliano.

The 3-D resurrection will mark the first "Charlie Brown" feature since 1980's "Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and Don't Come Back!!)." It is expected to hit theaters on Nov. 15, 2015, just 10 days before the "Finding Nemo" sequel, "Finding Dory," will arrive.

I read about this a few weeks ago, and my initial reaction was "ugh no, just no". There's really no way this can't be terrible.

There have been plenty of peanuts cartoons so what's the big deal? Snoopy is a very popular character around the world - if they want the film to make money, it's probably going to be focused around him. I have a feeling there will be a Snoopy biplane scene and Schroeder's musical notes flying into our faces.

Not to be cynical, but I suspect we're going to see the Peanuts gang modernized a'la The Smurfs and The Chipmunks.

Blue Sky studios has already said the film will remain faithful to the comic strips and we won't be seeing a CGI Snoopy or a live action/CGI film.

Well, we'll see how faithful they remain...I'm not holding my breath. Waiting for the first poster with characters sporting modern attitude poses...

They've already shown a preview of the movie at some movie con and it's faithful to the comic strip. I don't see them changing the animation or style of the movie after they have already started.

Dr. Seuss' widow approved movies like The Cat In The Hat, The Lorax and Horton Hears A Who. A familial connection means precisely NOTHING when it comes to Hollywood adaptations of beloved children's properties.

didn't see 'Cat in the Hat', but I for one think all involved with 'The Lorax' should be pushed down a very deep well.
