Locked prices for downloads and streaming? $700 + Thousands more for a 4K TV? Limited space for movies? No thanks. I'll stick to BD.

Sony needs to stop shoving this down consumers' throats.

Early reports is that the Sony's rounded FMP-X1 ultra HD media player is not working with Sony UHD TV sets & 4K projectors

Sir, not to worry, early X900 adopters should easily qualify for a Free 4K Premium Service Activation which will then allow them to work with the FMP-X1….https://www.4kactivation.com/

I am a Sony fan and supporter but I agree with you 100% on what you said. I think Sony is going way overboard on this 4K thing and I can see why. Their HDTV business is hurting and they are hopeing that 4K saves it. But they wont get a dime out of me that's for sure because I am very happy with what I have.

I don't know what people expect, but the player comes with 10 movies. Do you think they'll start selling 4k movies for $10 each? I would buy it if I had a 4K TV. New tech costs more, deal with it or wait on the sidelines until the price comes down to your comfort level.

I didn't see anything in the article, but will this player work with any 4kTV, or just Sony models? I would only consider the player if it worked for any model 4K TV.

Nice dog Steve. I view the situation from a different perspective…rather than being so self-centered in my (or your) own little world. What I mean is that amongst vocal HD proponents there seems to be a general lack of caring or thoughtfulness for others. Think about the future home theater enthusiasts who have yet to become ‘enthusiasts’ because they are too young or perhaps too involved with just supporting themselves or their family in the current economic climate.

When things turn around and they do happen to enter this hobby with passion and more disposable income than they currently have, wouldn’t you want them to at least have the opportunity to experience a more refined home theater experience (with 1st generation 4K paving the way, i.e. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...pe#post7325076) than you have had for years?

Well then I empathize with the early-adopting 4K consumers so afflicted with the problem and hope that the V.P. responsible in the consumer electronics division is honest and expeditious in handling the situation contrary to that of intentionally misleading consumers with what essentially was a cover-up by the Blu-ray mastering dept. to legitimize a new *look* in regards to a past infamous consumer-related incident, if the Twilight Time people are to be believed…

”UPDATE: As promised, we have discussed NOTLD at the studio and are able to verify via SPE's Mastering Department, that our Blu-ray is indeed the approved transfer from 2010, generated for the film's 20th anniversary, and done in consultation with the film's director of photography….”

Best,
Nick Redman and Brian Jamieson.

In the grand scheme of things (because the 4K movement is so important to Sony), it should be interesting to see if the Board actually does spin-off a portion of its entertainment business (Sony Pictures, Music) and if the resultant infusion of capital prevents things like this from happening again in the future.

I would happily pay $30 for a 4K movie on physical format--but there is no way I will pay for downloads, as I'm not interested in watching films as intangible downloads. I was boxes, cover art, extras--and from time to time, some nice trinkets--to build a physical collection, thank you very much.

I would much prefer to own a 4K movie download than a 2K movie on disc (which I have plenty of, thank you very much). Quality comes first with me.

Very exited about seeing 4K for the first time, as well as seeing upscaled Blu-ray 1080p.

And the Karmin performance (several songs) from Jimmy Kimmel Live will also eventually be available for viewing at home using Sony’s 4K Media Player…http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...-karmin-579769

Discerning viewers who know something about detail and picture quality need not worry though, as musical performances don’t require nearly the same depth of field shots as sports do…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...th#post7773541

I'm certainly excited about 4K but the download-only thing bugs me too. Mostly because 40+GB takes forever to download. I'll get on board once the new physical format is released.

Dan, hopefully the BDA will determine that there is some viability to the 4K BD ‘sell-through business’ ( http://www.salon.com/2013/06/15/lynd...letely_broken/ )

So that consumers have choices . If you’re in the U.S. have a happy 4th.

Exactly how are they shoving this down consumers' throats? It's really very simple: if you like it, buy it. If you don't like it or don't think it's worth it, don't buy it. Sony has certainly released many products that the consumer market did not accept, such as SACD and Mini-Disc and this may or may not be another one.

We're in an early adopter stage and all early adopter products are expensive. It will be far less expensive when the next iteration is released and even less expensive after that.

But if this isn't accepted by the marketplace and Sony eventually gives up on it, then there will be complaints of "Well Sony obviously doesn't care about high-end quality." You can't have it both ways.
