Web Could Collapse As Video Demand Soars
But..but...I thought HD downloads could threaten optical media any minute now? |

If you need a good laugh go over to HDD. That place has become HD Download Central. It is amusing though that the same people who wouldn't accept any link that didn't come from Toshiba or Microsoft are now linking to every blogger they can dig up.

Here's a prime example of why HD downloads won't make much progress in the short term. If the ISP's can't cope with low-def TV on demand, it has no chance with HD. |

Grubert posted a thread some time ago, that for music the ratio between CDs and downloads is still 70%/30%. And music downloads are really easy, because the files are quite small. And CD has been declared "dead" and "killed by the pirates" a gazillion times. So even in a market with suitable internet infrastructure, downloads haven't "taken over".
How anyone can think movie-downloads in HighDef will amount to anything significant over the next 5+ years is beyond me. And even after that (with maybe an improved infrastructure) it will probably still be less than what we have with music right now, as the big movie files are still something of a hassle to store and handle. Not even talking about quality here. Even the european HDTV sat channels are cutting down their bitrates. They used to have decent quality, but they seem to go the way of the US HDTV channels. Even more reason to root money away from these services and towards Blu-ray. |

My opinion is that HD d/l will be a niche market like the on demand market is today probably 5-10% of the HD pie. It's the current buzz HD d/l or DD, but nobody has presented their plan but it's "the future"...

I've said it before... wake me up when music downloads reaches 60% of market share... then I'll tell you to wait 5 years... and then we might have to worry about downloads.
