Default Dual SVS PB-12 PLUS or Dual HSU VTF-15H

Hi!

I was wondering what would be a better choice for my room. The size of my room is 27'(Length) x 17'(Width) x 9'(Height).

There are 4 open entry ways to the room. The room is NOT a seal room with a door. It would be nice if the room was completely sealed with only one door to close.

I do like the fact that the HSU VTF-15H subwoofer got a 15 inch driver which will probably move a lot more air and get the "Thumb In The Chest Feel" in for my room.

For the SVS PB-12 PLUS, I do like the fact that it got a 800 watt Sledge amp. Does having a more powerful amp means better performance in a subwoofer???

Thanks for any advice!!!

I havent heard either one. Ive owned Dual PB12s and was happy with them. That being said Id say the VTF only because im a fan of bigger drivers when it comes to subs.

That being said any reason why Power Sound isnt on your list?
Similiar price and dual drivers might be even better:

Either way they are all good choices.

I'm far from an "expert", but from my own personal experience, yes. You don't have to work the amplifier nearly as hard to achieve high spl's, and your overall rawoutput should be a lot cleaner IMO

Thanks for letting me know about Power Sound Audio. But WOW!! The regular price for the XS30 was at $2598 but now it is on sale for $1149 including shipping. Am I reading that correctly? Talk about a great deal!

I just ordered two Power Sound Audio XV15 (should be here this coming week ). Both of these will be louder than a single SVS Ultra for less money. However the SVS Ultra will still go much lower in Hz and play them louder. (no matter how many XV15s i get). But then again there arn't many movies with <15hz soundtrack.

As far as the wattage vs. size question; I'll try to explain it as simple as possible.....

Yes, theoretically more wattage will be more powerful BUT....; the SVS is more than twice the wattage of the HSU, but that doesn't mean it is more powerful than the 350 watt HSU (we'll leave the size of the woofer out of this for now). I don't know the exact specs of each of these woofers, but generally (without getting to complex) it's all about efficiency. For one speaker it may only take 300 watts of power to get to a certain level while another speaker needs 500 watts to get to that same level of that 300 watt speaker. So in the end the last thing you need to look for a speaker is its wattage.

As for size, a 15" (EDIT: Theoretically) will produce much lower frequencies at a higher dB than a 12". However, a smaller sub will perform much better at higher frequencies as it is able to move faster. (Of course the design of the Subwoofers' enclosure, and the quality of the subwoofer has a lot to do with its sound quality and output as well, which SVS and other higher end companies have proven).

Honestly you can't go wrong with any of those. I would also consider the Rythmik fv15hp as well.

Now, you have over 4000cu/ft, having dual subs will definitely be beneficial in a room that size. However, sometimes "the wife" usually doesn't allow such things, but I figured i'd suggest it for you

This is not always true...as you have stated

Personally speaking from an SVS standpoint, the 2 different units I have both produce much lower hz than my Velodyne 15".

My theatre is very close to the size of your room. I only have one VTF-15H, but I can definitely vouch for the "thumb in the chest" feel that you describe. Which is one of the main reasons I decided to buy a HSU sub.

It often feels like my couch has been fully installed with buttkickers, but it's just the HSU pressurizing the room so well that the couch feels like it's shaking. I have never heard a SVS sub (have obviously read/heard good things), so I'm obviously biased to the HSU. Love my VTF-15H though. I know you're concerned about the 4 room openings, but I would have to think that two HSU subs in that room would do the job nicely.

Cool

Your room is large so, 2 x 15 inch subs would be a good start, using a good driver.Svs and Powersound drivers are better than average.

Size and quality of subwoofer driver,s does make a difference.Depending on how low (hz) you want to go ,size of woofer matters .

That's a website hiccup. Regular pricing for a single XS30 in Satin Black has always been $1149. The $2598 is for dual XS30s in one of the wood veneer options before the 5% "dual discount" is applied by the website checkout system. We'll look into it..

You might want to read the full review of the HSU VTF-15H at Audioholics.com., before making your decision.

I think all companies make a great subwoofer. But I would go with SVS or Power Sound Audio....more so Power Sound because Tom the owner of Power Sound actually hangs around this forum and helps anyone with Any subwoofer question regardless of company just goes to show....so if you have any questions about a power sound sub or any problems i wouldn't think it would be out the question to go directly to Tom here by PMing him or asking him in a thread and get good sound advice. In fact ive read that he has answered many many many questions from some guys here in the forum. So its something to consider but im sure HSU or SVS are great alternatives and SVS sure does make some purrrttyy quality subwoofers!

While not on the forum (as much?), SVS does have very, very good customer service. You can call them, and they're more than happy to help answer questions.

I can totally agree with this statement. I bought mine used, and they're still more than happy to answer any and all questions you have for them. (Trust me, I had plenty being new to HT )

Josh Ricci is retesting the HSU VTF15H and will post at AVS in about 2 weeks or so.

dr hsu was visiting this site quite a bit as well, you can look at the hsu thread and see he was offering advise to others, they also have their own forum on their website and i know from my visit to hsu research offices that they surf avs and offer support. i think that tom is very helpful on this and other forums as well, and that bodes well for power sound. i havent seen svs on this site, but i know theyve been to home theater shack and avs. imo, all the ID companies know where their business is coming from, and they try to be proactive and touch their customers where theyre being promoted. i respect all those brands and owners. I went with hsu because, they make a great product; they are very close to where i live(my last sub eD was in iowa and i wanted something i could turn to locally); they have great customer service; i could hear the sub before i bought it; price was what i was willing to pay. however if i lived in a close proximity to power sound or svs, i probably would have bought of their subs instead.
